cholesterol blood test

Does anyone know whether or not one should fast before a cholesterol blood test? There seems to be conflicting advice on the net!

It is wiser to fast before a lipid panel, at least in terms of triglycerides.

My surgery will only do a full lipid panel if you have fasted beforehand.. 12 hours .

The pathology shop where I get my blood tests done you have to fast for the testing, so no fast no test...
