I too have a family history of high cholesterol.
I do not take statins because of the side effects that I suffered. I have found that eating cholesterol decreasing foods worked for me and include a list here. You will obviously have to test your blood sugar response to them.
....Whole grains and oats.
....Blueberries.
....Pistachios, walnuts, almonds. ( Too many will increase weight).
....Avacados.
....Olive oil.
....Oily fish.
....Benecol/Flora products.
....Beans. (soya beans, butter beans,kidney beans, etc...)
