Hi there,
have been slowly getting my levels down and now my last result was 7.00 i know still have a way to go but very happy with that. I exercise 4 times a week in a gym for 1.30hours at a time. Very active the rest of the time. But the doctors keep going on about my cholestrol, it is 4.4. I have tried 3 different types of statins and they give me huge muscle problems so i then cant exercise and as for the brain foggyness dont even want to think about that. But they are still pushing me. Is there anything over than statins that can help. Eat all grains and nuts and seeds to try to help. Advice would be good.

Hi Suzzy,

I would smile politely and ignore them.

This is a chart of all cause mortality against cholesterol level; you'll see the highest mortality is at the lowest cholesterol levels - odd eh? The chart is using US measurements for cholesterol but you can clearly see that something is a bit fishy here; it's only at the upper levels of cholesterol that the all cause mortality begins to rise again; so we should all aim for the middle. According to this chart you could probably increase your cholesterol levels a bit.

Another thing is that as a woman by taking statins your all cause mortality risk will not be improved at all; i.e. you won't live a single day longer for taking them. The question is then; why are women being prescribed this drug at all? It's more than puzzling.

Further to what Dillinger wrote, I read an article somewhere that women SHOULDN'T have a cholesteron number below 4. I think it was on research done in France. the suggestion was that since women's hormone levels changet throughout life, they needcholesterol for its building blocks. I have statins prescribed and rarely take them. My cholesterol is under 4. My doctor says they have otherr protective effects. He accepts my cholesterol doesn't need lowering.

I can remember Miriam Stoppard making a similar point but about fat generally in women. She said that hormones are stored in fat and can be used in later life. Too much dieting increases the chance of osteoporosis when older.

I am not going to read all her books to find out exactly where she wrote that. I believe she also did some of the original research.

Not sure to be honest apart from a healthy diet , you could contact The British Heart Foundation and ask to speak with one of their Cardiac Nurses and discuss your concerns, here is a link to their website:

I am gobsmacked. What level does your GP want you to get down to ?
I can only guess that you have been getting your cholesterol down. 'Pushing' and 'going on about' almost verge on the bullying, when your level seems low to me. Higher levels of cholesterol are less of a problem to women - check out The Great Cholesterol Con by Dr Malcolm Kendrick, and THEN make up your mind if you want to take statins.
Google 'Dr Briffa and cholesterol.'
My level is 5.4 and I won't go near them.

Don't be bullied into anything you're unhappy or unsure about. Educate yourself, then make a more informed decision.
The medical profession is obsessed with cholesterol levels. A number of health professionals dare to disagree with them.
I obviously also disagree. The answer is to find out more about these opposing positions.

Thankyou all for your advice. I am and have not been bothered about my levels just the doctor keeps flagging it as abnormal levels for a diabetic. Getting a bit fed up with it to be honest. We all have so many other things to think about and i am trying hard to reduce my sugar levels by eating heathily cannot do any more than that and if i take statins i cant exercise because of the pain in the legs, which is silly. So i will try now to stand up and say no when i go next week. I am not very strong when they push so much. But i am learning to be.

In my opinion that's where you should put your effort i.e getting control of your levels. If you do that, exercise and get generally healthy then having a cholesterol level of 4.4 as opposed to 3.9999999999 is completely marginal.
