I had good results by taking cinnamon capsules. It was the only thing I found that ever seemed to help my morning fasting levels but only marginally. Others like bitter melon and especially gymnema were good at spike control (I found gymnema nearly as good a Metformin in helping bg's) Only certain varieties of cinnamon work (Casia) and you need to make sure you don't take too much as otherwise it can give you stomach problems. I can't remember the exact way of calculating the maximum but for me at 85Kgs it was no more than 1500mg / day.
