T1D is new to my life. I scan for what's new in research and developments a lot and there are some interesting as well as some bizarre things to be found. I'm struck by people who have had this condition for years and who say that they've been promised cures constantly, since their diagnoses, with "Within 10 years," seemingly being the most common one. Our consultant says that there will be developments and that in 10 years' time there will be much better treatments available, but not a cure - in his opinion. I wonder what people make of the City of Hope public commitment to cure T1D within 6 years? It's 5.5 now, since the statement was made in January 2017. It seems an odd timescale to choose and everything has gone quiet since. Could that be because they're waiting for a full cure before saying anything, I wonder? When my son was diagnosed in November 2016, I was convinced that a cure must be very close, because I knew very little about diabetes and assumed this. I was also desperate. But now I'm less hopeful and maybe also a little less desperate (but still very sad) and think that smart insulins that work for 24-36 hours and adjust to sugar fluctuations, switching on and off "by magic," could be more likely to become reality. I'd be interested in others' views. Is there real hope out there?
