Coincidence?

Erland has just had chicken pox and had it much, much worse than his older non-diabetic brother. Is it just coincidence that he takes every cold, bug etc worse than his brother or can I blame the diabetes for it?

Just curious really, as it could just be bad luck.

Thanks

Annette

If I get a cold it takes me ages to get over it, others with the same virus are over it in a day or two, mine can go on for weeks.

Yes, being diabetic does makes infections worse, and recovery slower in my opinion and experience.

It is also probable that the better controlled the diabetes is the less compromised the immune sytem is.

Many years ago my two non-diabetic children had chicken pox, one after the other. My son who got it first had it so mildly - the tiniest red blobs with tiny scabs on them, we had trouble working out what it was. His sister who caught it from him had it really badly.

So even with children without diabetes, there can be differences.

I think people with diabetes dont necessarily CATCH illness more than those without, but i think it does take longer to recover, of course especially when control is not so good. I find my skin takes longer to heal. I don't really ever get sick, and i never really have apart from diabetes lol. When i was diagnosed i hadn't been to the doctors in 7 years. and the only times i've been back is diabetes related and one to investigate a lump in my breast.

I'm pretty sure i've never even had the chicken pox!

I mean they don't reccomend we have flu jabs if we didnt recover as quick as those without would they?

I agree. Khaleb takes longer to get over infections and that sometimes makes me think he gets more than other kids. His doctor gave him the pnumonia vaccine at the start of this year and he will start getting the flu vac next year, when he will be 5. Last year was a nightmare for chest infections and this year is seeming a little better, so far.
