Maybe Im expecting too much, but our Diabetic Nurse specialist has gone on leave without informing us and I feel a bit cross about it . I would be interested to know what others have experienced with their diabetic nurses.

My 17yr old daughter has recently been diagnosed type 1 -we're nearly six weeks in to it and we have been coping ok'ish up till now ( had a few scary moments!) with to start with weekly visits from the nurse . My daughter has now returned to 6th form college last week and although I was in contact with the nurse last week about arranging our next appointment with her ( we didnt book anything as awaiting date for next hospital check up) we havent seen her in a fortnight. This is probably normal practice.

Yesterday when we did need some advice about our daughters fluctuating blood sugars- the reasons we cant figure out, I call the nurse only for her answer phone to tell me shes on annual leave . There are other people we can contact - another diabetic nurse in the team but doesnt cover our area or the ward but of course they havent got to know my daughter and dont know us.
I totally understand that the nurse is entitled to her annual leave and shes not at our' beck and call' and she has lots of patients and we are just one of many but..... when your feeling vulnerable which Im sure many diabetics must feel and not confident with what your dealing with ...you've spent time building a relationship with that person and they tell you to contact them any time if we have any worries or concerns and that they are there to help- so when you do need to call them they're not available !
I just feel it would have been courteous to have let us know ( probably not very practical I know!)
Maybe Im just over reacting ! Thanks !

Well at least you've had a rant. There must be someone else you can contact for info?

I would just say dont get attached to any one nurse! its very unlikely you'll be able to get one when you need to anyway.

My practice has two nurses who have done the extra training for diabetes, it is standard for your first appointment that you see both of them together so that when the full time one is off for any reason you know who you are going to be speaking to. This may work because it is a reasonably small practice.
