Confused about my monitor testing results

Sorry to keep being a nuisance by asking questions on here but new to monitering and getting very confused

Yesterday my GB level on getting up was 5.6 and two hours after breakfast was 5.4 which I was happy with then it seemed to go all haywire later in the day.
Walked the dog late afternoon then tested before I had my meal and it was 4.0 two hours after meal it was 7.6
My tea was a homemade turkey burger..no roll.. some mixed vegetables peas beans and carrots and two very small potato skins with a little cheese in them and a kiwi fruit with some Total Greek yogurt sprinkled with a little Stevia. I did not expect it to raise my GB levels this much so is this normal
Does the levels depend as much on size of a meal even if the food is good as the actual food itself ...maybe I am having to large a meal
This morning my level was 7.3 before breakfast... again not what I expected... not done the two hour test yet but freaking out a bit now and don't really want to do the test
 
right from what I would say is about 20g of carbs (low carb no need to worry) 1 kiwi 10g and potato skins/other carbs 10g. I generally expect 10g to raise blood sugars 2m/mol so would expect to go from 4-8 so your exactly right. 7 is NOT high or anything to be worried about especially after a meal - its not diabetic levels even.
 
I would say don't say sorry for asking questions as this is what the forum is for; and remember there is no such thing as a silly question.

Regarding your BG; it's a fine balance between your insulin, meals and how your liver responds. With your BG being down at 4 no doubt your liver responded by releasing glucose. This system is much slower responding cf. the pancreatic one. The liver responds to a hormone called glucagon, but there is a delay. It would begin to release glucose and then because you had dinner that added to it. Now, this is not to mean you shouldn't have had dinner. It also depends on the glycaemic index of your food. I'm thinking the potato skins and yog maybe added the most. In addition to this the cheese will slow down how fast the sugar was absorbed.

Oh and BG levels that you mention are fine. 4-7 before a mean and 4-11 after is what my endocrinologist has said (correct me if I am wrong folks). Make sure you do the test though as you will then get an idea of what each meal does to you.

Your bs levels were roughly what mine were during the day yesterday, I didn't do a test after tea though and now I'm thinking maybe I should have. I got 10 test strips with my monitor and I have one left so need to get some more. Can anyone please advise me the cheapest place to buy them?
 

Buy them? You should get them on your prescription? Your presc should list strips, sharps bin, insulin, needles; to name a few (varies between people mind). I would head down to your pharmacist first as they'd be able to advise better than trying to get hold of a Dr via a receptionist. Failing that head to the hospital or diabetes centre.
 
I am prediabetic so does that make a difference. When I mentioned to the GP I was going to buy a monitor he said I wouldn't advise using one of those so I don't think he would have prescribed it! I am having my flu jab today so will mention it to the nurse
 
Ah sry, thought you were diagnosed. Not sure how the pre-diabetic prescriptions/medical advice works. Although with it being this surely they have requested you have regular checks? With a monitor though it can scare you; then stress raises your sugar levels. Plus remember 'normal' people can have spikes. I mean, if lets say my brother had a whole bag of haribo sours; his BG would rocket. The difference here will be it's soon dealt with by his pancreas and rtn then to normal.

Thanks to you all of you for your replies now I know a bit more about theBG levels I need to aim for. I thought in the 7's sounded really high but seems it is not bad at all so will keep on with what I am eating. My goal is to try and keep type 2 at bay for as long as possible although my doctor seems to think it will develope eventually
 
I asked the nurse about test strips on prescription...no was the answer. She said they would only prescribe test strips to people diagnosed with diabetics on medication. She said what they want to do is encourage a lifestyle change...fair enough but she couldn't understand when I said I wanted to check which foods are OK to eat and which aren't. I briefly said what I was doing and she said it looks like I am going the right way...will see if she still agrees when we discuss it further at my diabetes appointment on Monday. I will look at amazon.
 


Have you seen a diabetic nurse regularly since you were told you are prebiabetic. I only saw the DN once after my blood test this year as my levels were 6.8 and 6.9 so very borderline now we discussed what excercise I have and what I was eating she said it was all good and there was no need to see her again unless the diabetes did develope in the future I have a routine blood test every year..usually two tests two weeks apart... next one not due until next September. They say diabetes developes very slowly seems to be so with me as my BG levels have been creeping up each year for the last eight years
 
Monday will be my first appointment with the nurse since I saw the GP and was diagnosed prediabetic. She did say today that they would test again in 3 months time and that is what the GP said when I saw her.
