hi, i take metformin for a few years now and dr has recently put me on glimepiride 4mg.which was 2 mg at first. side effects on these made me feel bit rough. so this week i tried no metformi or glimepiride for 5 days readings were 10.8 2 hours after food. i felt fine . so over a few x days no improvement.so i started to take metaformin. 2x 500 slow release i checked reading 2 hours after food still in double figures. shall itake glimepiride as well or any other ideas. confused as same readings with metaformin or without .

Hi,

Metformin has very little effect on blood sugars. It helps with insulin resistance and helps to reduce the amount of glucose produced by your liver, but all to a small extent. It is mainly an appetite suppressant so can help you lose weight. What it will never do is lower post meal levels.

Glimepiride works on the pancreas forcing it to produce extra insulin, so this will help with post meal spikes.

The decision is yours! However, you can help yourself by reducing the amount of carbs you eat. The fewer carbs the lower your levels will be. Medication can help, but diet is the real key. All carbs convert to glucose once in the system, so it is wise not to eat too many.

No-one here can tell you which meds to take or stop taking. That decision is yours with advice from your nurse. The Glimepiride is more effective is all I can say.
