Confused Newbie!

Hi, I was diagnosed 29 Dec 2011 as Type 2. I'm 43. Big shock, only symptom was tiredness. No one else in my family has diabetes so never occurred to me. Not hugely overweight and I'm losing well on a generally healthy low gi diet which I hope is having a good effect on my BG, I'm also exercising.

However, I find all the conflicting advice on diet very confusing and although the nurse was not keen on me using a BG monitor I've got one and intend to start seeing how different foods affect my BG. Is this a good idea?

Other thing I'm confused about is that I'm on Metformin (thankfully no sideaffects!), 3 tablets a day which seems a bit excessive when I've read other peoples posts. My BG was 11 when I was diagnosed. Is this dose normal for a newbie?

Would be grateful for any advice.

Thanks.
Llanga

I too was denied having a b g monitor, doesn't really bother me,i am on one 500mg metforman a day,my last six monthly checkup overall was 6,the nurse even said i could come off metforman if i give up my daily beers, still thinking about it,but i try and am losing weight slowly,i do excersise daily, mabe you should question the amount of Metformans your taking?

Hi llanga and welcome to the forum
You are quite right to want to test and see what effect various foods have on your levels. Test before and 2 hours after meals and if the results are similar then that food is OK. Otherwise reduce or cut out that food. See the information below.

For Metformin, I am not sure how many mg are 3 tablets - the dosage can vary. Personally, I started Met at 1000 mg per day (3 months after diagnosis) then it was increased to 1500 mg per day. I believe the maximum dose is 2000 mg per day. It will only reduce your levels by 1-2 mmol/l at the maximum dose.

Here is the information that we give to new members. I hope you will find it helpful. Ask as many questions as you like as there is usually someone here to answer you.

The metformin won't hurt you. Just take it, and if BGs come down well you can always reduce it. Daisy's advice on diet is good, so go with that, cut out the starchy carbs, stick to low GI and moderate your overall carb intake - testing will tell you how much by. Good luck and welcome!

Thanks for the quick responses and the welcomes!. I'm taking 1500mg of metformin daily.
I was feeling a bit lonely with all this as I don't know anyone else with diabetes so I'm glad to have found this forum
