I do not have diabetes
Hi everyone, very new to this and after some help/advice.

Im 5'10" , weigh 11 stone 8lbs (74kgs) and im a dog walker so very active, dont really enjoy sitting still. i rarely eat junk food. I do drink but not excessively and i do like a cake or sweet treat but not every day.

I was ill in February, had a blood test and all ok apart from pre diabetic sugar levels and since then ive bought myself a home testing kit and ive been aware of sugar alot more so cut a few things out so even less sugar in my diet.

My blood sugars over tge last few says have been

Fasting 6.4, 6.2, 4.6, then today 7
2 hours later 6.6, 6.4, 5.2 then today 6.4

todays reading of 7 before eating and then 6.4 2 hours after breskfast is baffling me.

Not sure if im prediabetic, diabetic or what, everything i read says loose weight and do more excercise but ive no weight to loose and do lots of excercise.

Any advice appreciated, do i need to go back my GP??

I some times finf the meter can give a completely strange reading then when you do another it is usual or lower
what time do you take the first reading

All those numbers look in the same ball park allowing for meter accuracy

Are the 2 hours later numbers 2 hours after you’ve eaten? If so then I’m not seeing anything out of the way. In fact they’re pretty good numbers to be back where you started or lower 2 hours after eating. Though they do seem to indicate you have some insulin resistance going on & your result of your blood tests saying that you are pre diabetic are most likely correct.

It’s not just what we eat that can affect our BG - there’s about 50 different things, including weather, lack of or too much sleep, low lying infections, stress, exercise or change in routine.

It was about 7:30 am then about 9:30

I think thats whats so confusing, if its not what im eating or lack of excercise then how can i control it and do i need to or is it just something i need to except and live with and does that mean going back to the doctors

Hi,

Can you give us a better idea of what you eat on an average day?

You mention cutting down on sugars, but does that include carbs (which turn into sugar in the body)?

Yes, most days ill start with fruit, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries and banana with greek youghurt, nuts and seeds, about half a cereal bowl in total. Ill have a coffee and a slice of toast. Usually wholmeal/seeded and 1g of sugar per slice but icwill have a teaspoon of jam. *ni sugar in coffee)

Lunch is either an omelette, a wrap or mackerel & salad, today was the salad, it included a boiled egg, cheese and a piece of bread.

Ive snacked on plain almonds (used to be fruit and nut mix until i found out how much sugars in the dried fruit. Ill probably have 1 more coffee and 1 tea all with wholemilk and no sugar

Dinner tonight will be a curry, we make our own sauce/spices and add coconut milk, ill have brown rice and a naan bread.

Thats probably it, i did have a satsuma late on last night and a chocolate with a cup of tea.

I dont think we eat badly, i know some of the above have sugars in and the chocolate was naughty but overall think its a decent diet, please feel free to rip it apart and tell me otherwise though.

I definitely don’t want to rip it apart but….

Toast and banana for breakfast is likely to be raising your blood sugar. The rest sounds good. Try testing before and 2 hours after your normal breakfast, then the next day leave off the toast and banana and see if there is a difference.

Likewise naan and brown rice are likely culprits. Again testing will show you if it’s a problem for you.

Be aware that if you don’t want to lose any more weight you would need to add more protein and fat into your diet if you decide to reduce carbs.

If you have already made changes to your diet since your last test in February that may be enough to take you out of the prediabetic range. So I would ask your gP if they can repeat the test to see tge effect of your changes so far.

naan in general is fairly hefty in carbs. around 50g per 100g in weight.

https://www.asda.com/groceries/product/5498615?oldCo=true nutrician info on asda's brown rice - 39g per HALF PACK. so 78g carbs per 250g portion. . its 31g carbs per 100g

soon adds up.

could try switch: naan to keto variant this one is pretty decent: add some butter / garlic and corriandar still would be pretty low https://sugarfreelondoner.com/keto-naan-low-carb-flatbread/

rice: have you experimented at all with cauliflower rice? generally find a little tasteless however adding a little bit of fave herbs & spices

i'd try if possible to try switch one of those out with the curry.

Just a small point on blood sugar readings. Our blood sugars fluctuate minute by minute, day by day. They are never the same at any given time, as there are so many factors that influence blood sugar levels,
; sleep; food choices and compositions; hormone levels; physical activity; stressors; signalling between your liver and your pancreas; the time of day, immune responses that we may not to be aware of, even temperature and our general sense of well being. It’s complicated. Decisions are made regarding how well out bodies handle blood sugars are taken over time, as patterns emerge, for a reason.

Whether you reach the medical threshold for diabetes is measured over a three month period. Then it is tested again 3 months later .This allows for blood sugar patterns to emerge over time.

ok thanjs for that, all good advice cheers

yes tgats right
thats (sorry)
ok thank you

brill, thank you. My partner does cauliflower rice every now and again, i like it so happy to just switch, thanks

Well if that’s your numbers you have it pretty much almost there. Your aim is to have a rise of less than 2 2 hrs after eating, your return to 2 hrs before is excellent as your back to where you started.

But your start numbers are ever so slightly high so you can work on that by reducing carbs (not just sugars) further.

There are some links in my signature you may find helpful.
It’s a marathon not a sprint and take your time to learn and read through things. There’s a lot to get your head round. Do you know what your Hba1c was when you were diagnosed? If it’s just on the cusp of pre diabetic then you may not need to tweak it too much
