Confused!

Hi everyone. My name is Beryl and I've recently been diagnosed with T2 diabetes. I had a blood test taken on the 23rd Jan and saw the practice nurse on the 31st Jan. My glucose levels were 13.00mmol and my HbA1c 73.7% (that means nothing to me!). I had tonsillitis during January (twice) so that may have made my glucose levels rise? I've been given a couple of leaflets from the nurse, but no access to the dietician - will be asking to see her next visit. Since the 'diagnosis' I have changed my diet and have managed to lose nearly a stone in weight (nearly 11st and only 5ft 2ins) I'm now 10st. I've only just started take blood readings, I was 9.5 on 17th Mar, 8.9 on 18th and 8.8 this morning. I don't get any help from the health authority with the strips and bought the machine myself. I will be asking for them on my next visit to the nurse, doubt I will get them but I'll put up a good fight! I've cut out potatoes from my diet, apart from the odd roast which I now brush with rapeseed oil, instead of pouring oil over. I eat about 50g of wholegrain basmatti rice with grilled vegetables(small peppers, mushrooms, onions), fish (either salmon, frest tuna, small amount of prawns, queenies, smoked mackeral). If I do a stir fry I only add 5 mls of rapeseed oil to the pan and no sauces but a small amount of low salt soy sauce. I always have porridge for breakfast made with soya milk as I'm allergic to real milk. I eat a salad once a day, with either mackeral or low fat cottage cheese. I work shifts so take the salad to work either for lunch or tea. I walk to work too, instead of the easy 10 min walk I go the long way which takes around 20 - 25 mins, depending upon which direction the wind is blowing!
I understand that bananas are not so good for me, I usually eat one a day. Is mango a good food to eat? I'm trying to have an apple and a tangerine/satsuma a day too. I only eat wholegrain bread with seeds in, have not eaten white bread for years.

What else can I do that will help get my sugar levels down?

thanks in advance

Beryl
