Hi All
Im new here so go easy on me lol I was diagnosed T2 2 years ago & i must admit i buried my head in the sand for a year or so & to be honest have only been taking things seriously for the last 2 months! So my BS have always been high between 15-20 & felt like **** all the time, this is something i became used to I have had metformin increased over time im currently on 4x 500mg Metformin & 1x 80mg Gliclazide a day
Yet my BS still never went below 15 until yesterday, Was at work & started to feel awful "wobbly" "disorientated" "sick" like i was just going to pass out & got a throbbing headache that just wouldnt shift. Checked my BS & it was 7.4 but could i of been having a hypo because my body is use to coping with high sugar levels all the time? anyway i managed to eat/drink & get my BS up to 13 then i started to feel alot better & then today exactly the same thing happened, my BS is currently 14 & i feel fine apart from Headache that wont shift & alot of tingling in my fingers & toes! Does anyone have any idea why my levels have dropped all of a sudden? There have been no changes what so ever in my lifestyle/diet ect :/

It would be a great help if you post on here what your diet is and then start from there onwards. I was in the same boat as you were 10 months ago as my blood sugars hit 45 when I was diagnosed, then I gradually lowered them and then was off the Gliclazide in a month after the nurses got my sugars down to 16 and then shot back up when I left to 30 - 40 but as time passed I've got them into single digits. the hypo that you feel is a false hypo and it is good that your sugars were at 7.4, but most diabetics on this site would say to lower your sugars even more to the 5's and 4's and only eat a high protein food.

Thanks for getting back to me I have never changed my diet from how is was pre T2! My old doctors was useless but i didnt know that at the time, I asked them about testing my BS myself & they said they dont recommend it as all machines give false results, also never see a DN with them & i didnt know that i had to either, was basically given pills and sent packing! but since moving to a new area & getting a new doctors im learning more & reading a lot on here has helped As from today i am changing the way i eat I now understand that the 7.4 were a good thing & if it happens today i certainly wont be taking anything to raise it! So do i just ride it out? How long do you think it will be until my body accepts these new low levels?

dotty,

your body is used to higher blood sugar levels and you are getting false hypos. 5.8 two hours after eating is what you should be aiming for, but since you are on Gliclazide, you don't want to be below 5 when driving or operating machinery. It is for that reason that You should be self monitoring - below 5 don't drive.

Try to reduce your carbs and those that you do eat should be lower Glycaemic Index. Do it gradually and your body will acclimatise - you may get to the point where you are dropping below 5 (and even 4 - true hypos). If that happens regularly, you need to see your doctor to review your meds.

Thanks Ellis

I have made a start on the low carbs today, these are my BS today

morning (fasting) 10.3
2hrs after brekkie 18.3
before lunch 5.0
2hrs after lunch 5.7
& just now 6.7

I have again been experiencing the false hypo today, but without the headache (thank god) & have just gone with it now i know not to panic

Hi

I was like you, ignored it until it was impossible to ignore it any longer.

I would be interested to know what you had for breakfast that made your reading go up and what you had for lunch that didn't.

I have to lose 6 stones. I ignored that too!

Have you got a plan on how to tackle things?

For brekkie I had weetabix (won't have them again)
Lunch was just snacks really as I didn't really prepair so I had egg mayo n ritz crackers
Cheese sticks & a peperami

I'm having ham, cheese & onion omlette tonight for dinner!

I plan on doing the low carb for a few weeks to see how that goes & hope these false
Hypos vanish, as I said I didn't get the banging headache today so feel better about that
I also have to lose around 4 stone so hopefully I can start to lose some doing the low carbs

Thanks.

I'm finding breakfast a challenge. I loved granola and ice cold skimmed milk. Or toast.

One morning had egg mayo! (Eww). Then I've had some cheese omelettes but it's a challenge to eat them!

Going to get veggie bacon when I'm out next.
I've just ordered some Atkins chocolate shake which will arrive on Friday. So too more breakfast to think of!

I'm trying to exercise more. I also have bad tingling! I'm going to get rid of it!

Keep in touch

Cara

Its difficult isnt it But im sure once we get into the swing of things we will be fine!
I also love toast for breakfast so ive brought some Burgen (12g) & will have some scrambled eggs with that, I didnt think about Atkins shakes im gonna have to get some

Ive have bad tingling too in my hands constantly & every now n then in my feet!
Tbh im just fed up with feeling like s**t ive felt like this for 2 years & it just becomes the norm, you just get on with it & if it hadnt of been for the false hypos i doubt very much i would of joined this forum & started doing low carbs so probably a blessing in disguise

How long ago were you diagnosed? what meds do you take? xx

Burgen is the only bread I use at home now - not ideal but used to it now - they do small loaf so hubby can have his own bread. Only buy low Gi pasta and mix lentils with rice - can't manage completely without carbs:smile: I don't need to lose weight.
