Conversation with GP!!!!

Had a conversation with my GP this is how it went.
him: "who put you on aspirin?" :shock:
me: " you did 2 years ago when first diagnosed."
him: "are you sure?" :shock: :shock:
me: "isn't it on the screen in front of you?"
him: "when did you have your last heart attack or stroke?"
me: "well unless you know something i don't i'm not aware i've ever had either" :shock: :shock: :shock:
him: "Ummm, you should never have been on it, that's old school nowadays, stop taking it, in fact it's quite detremental to your health" :shock: :evil: :shock: :evil:

Fortunately i'm under the consultant for my diabetes due to horrendously high bloods since last December. When i speak to him he can't understand why i won't go and see him as i'm suffering with thrush (orally and other) and a whole list of other ailments due to the high sugars but i just don't trust or have any faith in him!!!!

Sorry for the rant but i just had to get it off my chest!!!!!

god don't you just want to slap them sometimes!. My surgery has a so called "diabetic" doctor, who I went to see last week. To give her credit, a month earlier she did change my medication to take me off the dreaded Metformin, and now my stomach has settled on Actos and Amaryl. However I showed her my readings log, which in my eyes is still high (only two readings below 8.3 in a month, and what did she say?. " Oh its fine as long as you stay below ten don't worry about it :twisted: I give up....You started me off now, I wonder how many others will read this nd want to let off steam! :shock:
 
I saw my doctor the other day for the first time since diagnosis about 18 months ago about my Diabetes previously id only seen the practice nurse who originally diagnosed me This nurse has now left the surgery so its down to the Diabetic "expert"?? doctor now.

The doc asked me what doseage of Metformin i was on, I told hime none as i was on Diet control only... WHAT he said you should have been on Metformin since the start why arnt you??. You tell me i replied you are the expert :?

Its a bit scary, your life in there hands

Sometimes you just have to smile and get on with it.

Remind me again when I have some longer term credibility (only 16 months of LCing and and HbA1c of 5.2 no medications because I chose to stop them and figures that resulted in my GP telling me that I am now officially "impaired" not T2-I wish!) to explain the difference between Ketosis and Ketoacidosis.
I will also give her more detail as to why Lipitor is not for me and why I overheard patients in the waiting room discussing problems they were having that they thought were as a result of taking Lipitor. One had just been in to the GP and was told that Lipitor was fine, not the cause of his muscle pain.
Sheesh! I am half a planet away from many of you guys as well.
 
It is not just knowledge about diets and medication they get wrong either.

I was told to inform the DVLA and my car insurance about my diabetes, I take 500mg of Metaformin at the moment. I told both the Dr and DN that the DVLA do not need to be informed unless I go on insulin or had other complications. They both disagreed with me.
So now I have a letter from the DVLA to show them on my next visit what the DVLA's criteria is for reporting diabetes.

Hazey with your sugar levels being so high, what are doing now to get them down :?:
 
Hi ihs, my consultant has classed me as an "enigma" and has said that he well and truly is now thinking out of the box as i've not had a reading under 16 since December and normally mid to high twenties. My insulin levels have quadrupled since then and still no improvement. I don't know it may be my time to meet my maker.

Have you tried using Apidra insulin at all? It can make a significant difference on high blood sugar levels as it lowers fairly quickly but doesnt hang about for too long so is good at preventing hypos. Some consultants think that all bolus insulins act the same but this is not really true so do enquire.

Also, U500 insulin is an option that you could discuss with your consultant. Is there a medical reason as to why your sugar levels are so high? Are you using an insulin to carb ratio at all? Are you testing 6 times a day to see what is happening. If not, then you do need to see a dsn about this or ask to go on a DAFNE type course.

I'd been on Aspirin for years, when my GP took me off it. I then reminded him I've had a stroke, so he put me back.

i have been to visit my consultant today , she put me on byetta ,as well as lantus insulin & apidra fast acting insulin plus 4 x 500 metformin ,liptor ,plus 2 blood pressure tablets a day ,i explained that byetta should not be used with other insulins ,im sure these people do not want you to get better ,rather have you keep returning as patients to keep their jobs ,im completely mistrustfull of them all ,sorry for the rant but i genuinly feel they dont really care ,but they all say the same ,if you stop your medication its a stroke/heart attack plus impotence is it scaremongery ? i wonder what life span difference between taking medication & not taking medication ,if its a couple of years is all the fuss really worth it ? :?:
 
Hi ihs, I understand everything you are saying it's just that along with the physical aspects i'm struggling with my emotional and confidence due to the long time i've been ill. Sometimes I'll go into a consultaltation and say "hello and "goodbye." I just find it really hard to speak to people in general at present.

I was looking at one of yr threads about food and noticed that you eat about 35g of carb (2 slices of toast) at breakfast. Have you tried eating just 1 slice of toast (using the same amount of bolus for 2) and then testing 2.5hrs later to see if yr bg levels have dropped and then eat the other slice if yr bg levels are below 9. Sometimes the "old school" way of staggering your carb across the day works fairly well.
 
This all just proves you need to be more informed than any medical person. I did the DAFNE course and one of my fellow diabetics was a GP who thought there were no carbs in fruit!!!!! I always refused to take aspirin, under considerable pressure from my consultant, and am glad I stood my ground. I have also been under pressure to take a drug to reduce my cholesterol (which has always been superbly low), I am refusing to do this, they never suggest a change in diet to reduce cholesterol, which is much safer and natural). For me the worst part of having diabetes is going to see my consultant, I get talked down to, lectured, told the same old diatribe and sometimes it's even worse, I have to see the duty doctor there, who has about as much knowledge of and insight into diabetes as my guinea pig. Read the research and don't put up with medical ignorance.
 
that's why forums like this one are invaluable - this forum has been much more use to me than any doctor I've seen. :shock: I have nothing against the medical profession and wish them well, but the biggest mistake you can make is just routinely accept what they tell you.
 
Hi iHs, sorry for the delay in replying but i've now got an horrendous cold. I don't actually have the toast any more, i normally now have a couple of boiled eggs each morning which i eat in work and i have, with the help of this site, reduced my carbs all round in general. I went and did some exercise last Thursday because i was so cheesed off but it back fired on me. My BS at the start was 24.6 and by the time i'd finished it was "high" and remained so for several hours after.

I'm just at a complete loss as to what to do st present!!!!!!!

This is only my personal experience with eating just eggs with no carb. I found that probably the protein content of the eggs even though they contain no carb, actually pushed my bg levels right up by mid morning and didn't come back down enough at lunchtime to be somewhere near my target.
I actually used a bolus of 4 units to cover the 2 egg omelette which I thought was more than enough only to find that I was fairly high 2.5hrs later. I still haven't worked out why this happens to me so now leave eating eggs until lunchtime but always with a slice of bread.

I'm just curious but how much bolus insulin are you using as a correction to get yr bg level down? Also, the high bg level that you are getting when you wake up is usually due to not enough basal at night. Do you go to bed every night with the same bg level or does it fluctuate?
 
Hi iHs, My levels at night are normally very high 18+. As to my insulin i am on the following, as asked to do so by my consultant: Levemir - morn 60u, evening 50u, my bolus is b/fast 30u, lunch 40u and tea 40u.

It's fairly obvious Hazey that the doses yr consultant is telling you to use are not adequate enough to deal with getting yr bg levels down.

Go back and see yr consultant with all yr bg results and the amount of carb that you are eating per meal and see if he recommends an increase in yr bolus or yr basal. Most times bg levels can be sorted, even if it also means changing insulins.
 
Who was it who said I cannot know more than the "experts"?
I'm obviously not alone in that
