Don't know if this is appropriate on here as not directly related to my TD1. Has anyone in the UK had an allergic reaction to the CT scan medicine and what did they do? I had 2 while I was in hospital and they gave me piriton to stop the itching but didn't mention what the cause was. I had another scan 2 days ago (friday) and from yesturday afternoon have been itching all over - piriton not working - have only just associated it to my hospital 'itching'. Only ask if in UK as another website I read meds recommended can have different ingredients worldwide so may not work the same. Also wondered which products diabetics had been recommended. Thanks for any help given as the itching I'd driving me nuts!
I was given a blood test before my CT scan with contrast dye to check kidney function and AKI risk (acute kidney injury). AKI risk score was Nil and kidney function fine, so I had the dye. After the scan I was told to drink a litre of fluid during the next hour to wash out my kidneys.
There are alternative contrast media that they can use if you're allergic to them - they're well known for causing itching. mention it next time you go for a scan and see if they can use an alternative. When I worked in radiology, we had one general solution (cheaper and ok for most people) and a more expensive one which we used on people who'd had previous reactions.
Thanks for your replies - my scan was for kidney and spleen scan. I was told to drink plenty on Friday night, which I did, but have still come out with a reaction (rash/itching etc). Having had 3 or 4 scans since April I'm hoping I won't need any more soon.
