Cycling Enthusiasts

Anybody on here a keen cyclist? Thought it might be cool to start a thread with other diabetic cyclists for hints and tips on management of BS levels and insulin adjustment etc. Especially on the long rides.

I tend to do around 80 miles per week in the winter and 150 in the summer, some of this is riding to work. I was always a keen mountain biker however recently bought a road bike and have not looked back since. Been training to try increase climbing technique and average speed. Would be cool to share stories of rides and whatever else likeminded diabetic cyclists normally discuss!

I am a Type 1 and do a reasonable amount of road cycling. I am using pump (Omnipod) which I have found makes insulin adjustment and blood glucose management much easier than when I was on a basal / bolus regime. If I can help with this please let me know.

Ahh thats cool, I am actually going on a pump soon for that reason. I have had a fair few hypos when on lengthy rides and I am looking forward to being able to monitor blood glucose constantly. Did you get the Omnipod on NHS? Is it comfortable to wear in cycling clothing?

Yes I did get the Omni Pod on the NHS (Hull & E Yorks) however if your insulin requirements are high you may not be deemed suitable due to cost of pods. I find the pods very comfortable, no problem under cycling gear, also you can put the PDM away in pack, carrier, pannier etc, also PDM has built in glucose meter so saves having to carry an additional meter. Good luck with pump acquisition if you are successful getting one I'm sure you'll prefer it to basal/bolus.

I bet you its hilly round there though? And all cycling is good man, 5 miles a day is better than no miles a day and im sure you will build that up when your fitness increases!!!
