DAFNE and time off work

Two is better than none, the course is certainly worth taking as unpaid leave/holidays.
 
I'm doing it in July at Aberdeen they have set it up for one day a week (wed) over 5 or 6 weeks can't remember hoping to get a step closer to getting a pump , wedensday works good for me as its my day off , been in the same firm for 8 years and now have a type 1 manager who helps lots when it comes to diabetics and needing time off .

I'm in Aberdeen too! The dietician told me they were thinking of doing some 1 day a week but I didn't know it had been implemented yet. Are they doing it up at the David Anderson building now?
 
Ok resolved as 2 days paid leave 3 days holiday and 2 working from homes the monday and tuesday after.

Not happy but its the best I could do.

Hope other people are more lucky!!

(this had better be worth it!!)
 
I did the DAFNE course in Plymouth last September, It was one day a week over 4 weeks. There was some homework and a bit of additional stuff to do on top of my normal day to day diabetes activities but COMPLETELY worth it. I learnt so much about carb counting, correction doses, worked out my insulin sensitivity AND the best bit was, I became eligible to get an insulin pump, which I have now had for about a month.

I'm not sure why you would need time to recover, as it's just classroom based stuff - basically a bunch of maths determined by how many carbs there are in the things you eat - as an engineer I would imagine maths to be no problem to you! The only challenging thing was increasing my blood testing to get accurate patterns and filling in a food diary, but the testing is something that increases with a pump anyways.
 
The point is more the fact that I'm going to have a hellish commute to get to this **** thing and I only agreed as my manager said I could have it all as paid leave in the first place.

Im annoyed and angry and really ****** off right about now to be honest. What is the point in having an equality act if it doesnt make disabilites equal?

Not sure if this will help but I approached my boss with the question 'how long do I get off for a hospital visit?' and found out it was 5 hours so I then told him about the course and explained how many half days and full days and said I was prepared to take the full day as holiday if I could take the half days as hospital leave. He actually said I could take the whole lot as hospital leave once I had produced the letter which was submitted to HR. I work for a reasonably large company (1000 employees) which I think helped me a bit but more often than not, it will depend on yoru direct boss which can be unfortunate :thumbdown: :?
 
No fraid that doesn’t help in this case as its a solid week off. My direct boss originally said yes then HR intervened to say no. I’ve clawed back two days but I still don’t feel it’s fair as I don’t know what or who they are comparing me with.

I work for a multinational company with 50000+ employees. Doesnt seem to help. :thumbdown:
 

that does seem a bit 'number not a name' mentality, ie: you are just a number in their system! It's a shame that the course you are doing is across one week and not spread out too. The course I did was called INSIGHT and it was over 4 weeks consisting of 3 half days and 1 full day. Maybe you could see if they do a similar one in your area? Maybe your company would be more agreeable to half days off? Worth a try I suppose :crazy:
 
I would like to know why these DAFNE courses cannot take place during the evening?

I never did a DAFNE course but found out about ratios from reading the messages on this forum and then putting 2 and 2 together realised that ratios could be worked out from doing frequent bg monitoring, writing down the carb eaten and adjusting the bolus insulin so that bg levels could be kept somewhere within sensible targets.

When I asked about DAFNE at my hospital before I got a pump, the dsn said due to lack of funding and also lack of diabetics being able to get time off from work to attend the courses, DAFNE had been scrapped. Instead, the hospital had put together a basic info booklet explaining the 1:10 ratio and using the 100 rule to work out corrections.

I'm sure that if DAFNE courses were held in the evenings instead of days, more diabetics would take advantage of them.
 
no its too late to change now. Because my manager agreed to the time off i was jumped up the waiting list so it starts on monday.

Its basically a check box exercise before i can get a pump. I've been told I cant have the pump unless I do the course (I’ve been carb counting for years, did a 20 min session with a dietician who couldn’t believe I picked it up so quick.)

more than Half the problems for diabetics are caused by other people's incompetency’s!!!
 


My advice would be to grin, bear it and get the pump! I've had mine for 3 years now and it is life changing for someone with Type 1 diabetes. I know the work politics suck but the pump will make it all seem worth while How exciting! which one do you want to get?!
 

I'm the same, HUGE multinational company. But I've found it's definitely helped as I'm not the first one going through this
 
I would like an Animas Vibe as it links with the Dexcom system.

Im hoping that when it links directly to Iphone it will become much cheaper and accessable therefore I could self fund. THAT would be life changing for sure!

I just feel so **** run into the ground with it all as ive been promised pumps before and its just all cakkapoo.
 

wow, wouldn't that be super cool if they linked to our Iphones!! fingers crossed for that day I use the Accu chek Combo at the moment but am considering the Omnipod for my next one which is due in July. I have the Freestyle Navigator CGM fitted at the moment (only for 6 days though!) and I'm loving it! Good luck with your Animas
 
Its already working as a trial on Dexcom it was at this year's convention for gadgets or something :-/ Ive seen it working on youtube
