Dangers with lantus

Hi I read some info reg lantus and it said it can cause cancer for users of the insulin, I called some of my diabetic nurses and spoke to them and they agreed the lantus is dangerous and said they recommend to all diabetics to use levermire instead, my diabetes does not get any easyer now i have an extra injection a day to add in the mix sorry for my little rant but seems to get harder as I go along had type 1 for 20 years now and harder to control than Eva (and it seems that a lot of peeps on ere are still using the insulin do u all not know )
 
i am recently diagnosed type 1 and was put on lantus as my basal insulin noone has said it is cancer causing and surely consultants would not put you on it if this was the case
 
If you search for Lantus & Cancer the following seem to be the majority opinions All Drugs have side effects and the decision is do they do more hard than good I Take Lantus and have been doing so for over 15 years I am now nearer 80 than 70 so I think I will keep using it

Results from the meta-analysis don't support the link between insulin glargine and an increased risk of cancer and the confidence in the estimates of the effects is very low. Further studies are needed to examine the relation between insulin glargine and cancer risk, especially breast cancer

The Lantus association with cancer in the recent report is weak. A handful of Swedish ladies who already had breast cancer and were using Lantus found their cancer worsening. But as the researchers themselves said, the sample was so small it might just be a numerical fluke.

The Eu has given lantus the all clear ...
"The drug regulator for the European Union effectively cleared Sanofi-Aventis diabetes drug Lantus from posing a greater risk of cancer, and said that the treatment should continue being prescribed and sold as usual.

The ruling was made by the European Medicines Agency earlier this week, and claimed that evidence linking the diabetic drug with cancer was inconclusive. Lantus is an insulin analogue that has been widely used since 2000.

The Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use reportedly commented: "Following review of all available information on a possible relationship between insulin analogues ... and the risk of cancer, the available data does not provide a cause for concern and that changes to the prescribing advice are, therefore, not necessary," European Medicines Agency's Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use."

Sanofi saw shares rise at the news, despite recent bad press in diabetes news."
 
I've never heard of that... and I've been in lantus for years now.
 
Nearly 52 years a diabetic, at least 20 years on Lantus, and still around!
 
Hi Karen sorry to hear you've got type 1 my diabetes team at the hospital said they are trying to do away with lantus which is weird I said why haven't you sent a letter out regarding the facts to inform diabetics she jst said that they don't have the resources to make that happen, like I've come to realise with diabetes even any of the specialist people don't know or understand what is best for longevity of life with diabetes some docs are ok with the basics, I found I diagnose and treat myself now, since I read 2 books from dr bernistein I'm so much more aware of the bad and the good with my condition. He's a type 1 and he really knows alot. I've never felt better now than the past 15 yrs jst coasting along not being told important things like they stomach delaying effect that can be brought on bye high sugar levels damaging nerves to the stomach that make sugar control even harder. if I new this then I would of been more careful in the past.
 
As far as I know; your body should see |Lantus as a human based insulin similar to Humalog but with a slight tweak to get it to last up to 24 hours (what they call an analog). The first insuliin's were animal in origin which caused a severe problems as it was seen by the body as an invading foreign organism.

if your ears are sticking out kev probably means your being punished for not listening properly I ain't trying to say that bit of info will save your life but when you add all the things dr bernistein tells you together the percentage might stack up to helps any one improve there life and enjoy it with there loved ones for longer I love his story of how he was ridiculed bye people like kev. and Dr bernistein backs up what he says with researched facts

Dodo, language hasn’t been around for 20 years so you can’t have used it for that long.
 

I started using Lantus in around '2001' I remember it clearly as that's when my ears started sticking out and I don't think it's been on the market much longer than that, now if there was any suspected problem with it, one would expect that the regulatory authorities in each country/continent using it, would see such links and withdraw the product from the market.

I'd be wary confusing facts and opinions myself, and if old doc Bernstein's relying on such facts, he maybe wants to change his research methods...

Funny you r kev we both have the same illness I don't know why were sniping each other but I jst care about people old bernistein is a professor phsysion. type 1 diabetic and has been for 72 years he's 83 now that's from the days were he would have to sharpen his own needles and test his sugar levels in a test tube over a hob he's a remarkable man he seems to understand us and he's not scared to tell the truth unlike most country's medical staff. he's uncuverd alot regarding sugar. he saved me from major break downs and illness when no doc or diabetes nurse had any answers he helped me learn more.
 

If you're concerned about it switch to Levemir, Tresiba or an insulin pump. I've heard bad things about it aside from whether it causes cancer or not (stinging upon injection, can cause BG drops if injected into blood accidentally). It was the first of the basal analogues, there are more modern options if you want to explore.
 

But none of that proves Lantus causes cancer, does the good Dr mention these cancer links in his books?


It can also seemingly stop working/appear to have a lesser effect mid way thru a pen, you notice this on waking with a blood of 18 and a need to extra bolus thru the day as your blood sugar doesn't want to drop, change pen and back to normal the next day, which is a pain, but it's a lot lot better than Humilin I or Human Ultratard.

Although the last two didn't make my ears stick out like the Lantus
 
 
I was on lanctus at diagnosis as only just started to be used and thought to be the only insulin to last 24 hrs without peaks and troughs. I was always having hypos particularly at night. In 2015 I was changed to Tresiba much better as really is without ups abd Downs , much better control although still not easy . Turns out lanctus wasn't lasting as long as thought so although there is now suggestion of a cancer risk better to discuss and evaluate your situation than risk poor control and complications if it's working best for you. For me Tresiba is so much better but maybe in 15 years time that will also have more risks associated with it . Most drugs have some kind of side effect or risk even paracetamol.
 

This talk about Lantus gives me the Creaps. Before I contracted Cancer I did the GTT to see well am I Diabectic or not. No insulin. Just Metformin. I even flew certain aircraft like this. Then I had to land the plane for good or fly in the Outback. So my GP gives me Lantus as the main insulin drug of choice for the front line. The night time long half life Insulin for the main course action Drug. Well@Twinkle_star It did not work. Tonight is experimental night. I took 15 Units of the stuff as I now have Novorapid as the Front Line Insulin. I will write you in the morning on the 30Th. I see so much experimenting going on that Endocrinologist will not tell you. I have some interesting tales.

On a serious note, if you're not wanting to split your Levemir dose and don't want to go back onto Lantus I'd suggest you speak to your team about Tresiba, which is an ultra longacting basal (up to 48 hours) which users are saying has a nice, flat profile.
