Dark Evenings

I have had a couple of anomalous reading for the last few evenings and was wondering if the dark evenings effected us at all.

I first really noticed it on Saturday. I hadn't tested much during the day but I was 5.2 before tea. I had Chicken Taggliatelle which from previous experience doesn't put my sugars up too much. Two hours later (about 7.15pm) it was 7.5, which is about what I would expect. I had been baking earlier so about 8.00 I had a low carb chocolate bun with a mug of hot chocolate (cocoa, canderel and cream). Checked before I went to bed at about 10.00 and the reading was 9.0, as it was unexpected I double checked (after giving my hands another good wash) and got exactly the same reading on the other hand.

Sunday I decided to start checking a bit more to make sure nothing major was going wrong. Fasting test was 6.7 which is perfectly normal for me (and I was a bit relieved to see that it had come down overnight). During the day it was normally in the 5s before food and in the 7s after food. In the afternoon, once my post lunch readings had started to decrease, I checked the low carb buns, in the 3 hours after eating one my peak increase from it was 0.5. I had tea at about 5.45 (chicken breast, salad and slice of bread and butter) and at 7.45 my reading was 7.3 (up from 5.7 before tea). A mug of hot chocolate and a few squares of chocolate at about 8.00, I will admit that I have a little more chocolate than I should have but it was the end of the bar, but not an extravagant amount and I am learning how much I can manage. When I tested before bed at 10.00ish I was expecting a bit of an increase, high 7s to low 8s, which was why I was shocked to get a 9.7.

Yesterday I decided to try and work out more what was changing. I don't test while at work, so when I got in I tested before tea and got 5.5. Tea at 5.30 was Asda's chicken Lasagne (38g of carbs).
7.30 the reading was 7.7
8.30 was 7.8
9.30 was 7.3
10.15 was 6.7
Two mugs of hot chocolate during the evening, and 3 chocolate raisins (pinched from what my OH was having).

What surprises me is how slow the decrease was. Normally after 3 hours I would have expected to be back in the 6s and by 5 hours I would have expected to be back into the 5s.

I know the meters have error factors and the readings are all close enough that it could just be that, but the whole thing seems a little strange. I am not worried by it, I don't tend to do a lot of exercise in the evening so I know I can always increase that to try and counter it, and I will have to watch what I eat a little more. I was just wondering if anyone else had noticed a change in the way their body reacted to sugar with the change in day length, particularly anyone who might work nights.

Three evenings isn't really enough to make a decision on so I will be monitoring more over the next few weeks, particularly with the clocks going back this weekend.

That's a long post, and I have one eye on something else at the moment, so forgive me if I misinterpret.

For two of the readings you cite, you've eaten pasta. Do yo eat that a lot? Have you done any extended testing for pasta? For me, I found that initially pasta looked "ok" for me, occasionally, but when I extended the testing a bit, beyond the 2 hours, I found my levels didn't drop as I might have expected, and the prolonged increase could flow over into the next day or so. So, for me, as it's not a firm favourite, pasta became a once in a while food option. I should test it again sometime soon, now that my overall tolerances have improved.

How many carbs and calories are you averaging (roughly) a day?

You are right, it was a long post, I just wanted to get what facts I could included.

Up to now, pasta hasn't given me a problem as long as I limit the amount, I do find it one advantage with the ready meals, they tell me how many carbs are in them and they limit my portion size. As mentioned elsewhere some do give me a problem (penne particularly) so I avoid those.

I have between 80 - 120g of carbs a day spread over 3 meals and a couple of snacks, which hasn't given me a problem up to now. When I am at home I test fairly regularly and tend to be guided by my meter as to what I can eat. I don't count calories, but my weight is coming off slowly, about a pound a week which I am happy with.

What I ate wasn't unusual with the exception of the chocolate bun, as it was the first time I had made them. Which is why I was surprised to see the increase, Saturday evening I would have expected it to come down not increase.

It has made me curious rather than concerned, there could be a whole host of reasons for the change its just a case of keep testing to try and work out what they might be.
