Hi. I've been told my dentist that I have gingivitis. Upon Googling "gum disease" with "diabetes" it appears that as well as causing problems with the gums, gingivitis can actually elevate blood sugar levels. My poor gum conditions come as know surprise to me because since childhood I've had a phobia about going to the dentists and there was a 12 year period in which I didn't get a check-up at all. Although the state of my gums is much better than before - I've been having regular six-monthly check-ups for the last four years - I was just wondering if my neglect of oral hygiene in the past has contributed to my high bs.

Has anyone else experienced such problems? I have another dental check-up coming soon and wonder if I should mention my diagnosis. Any advice appreciated.
 
Dentists usually ask if there has been any change in your medical history since you last saw them(well mine does anyway)You should tell them you are diabetic and ask what the best treatment for your gums is.
 
Well, that's interesting,popps. I have a real fear of dentists (long story but basically when I was a child I had 4 second teeth extracted instead of 4 milk teeth and consequently now have unsightly gaps). On my last visit I plucked up courage to ask if anything could be done to fill the gaps and straighten up the teeth I do have, as my horrible teeth make me feel very self-conscious. I was told it wasn't worth bothering, as I had gum disease and within 10 years I'd have lost all my teeth anyway!!! :roll: Well, that did my confidence a whole lot of good and I haven't been back to a dentist since.
I had no idea gum disease could affect blood sugar levels. Is there any part of the body bloomin' diabetes doesn't affect? I think I'll trade my body in this year and get a new one. Perhaps I'll put it on ebay and see what bids I get. :lol:
 
I used to have perfect teeth. But having had bgs over 30 for the last 2 years I have had to have every tooth filled. My dentist, who terrifies me lol does a quarter of my teeth at a time. As soon as she's finished all four quarters she has to start again. I use everything I can to protect my teeth.
If I could have them all out and have a pair of falsies the same day I'd do it.
My Oh has to come with me and has to hold my hand. I am so scared I shake the whole time I'm in the chair
 
I had some gum bleeding 5 years ago, but none since my BG is under tight control, the only problem I have is that my teeth are almost as old as I am and many are filled and some have cracked. I have a billiant dentist. I was terrified, because the dentist of my childhood once picked me up and shook me. I was too scared even to tell my parents. He also wrecked my mouth, by over filling. they're better nowadays. (Dentists NOT my teeth)
 

Sounds like the school dentists we had! Open wide...pair of pliers..no anaesthetic and pulled out 4 teeth,no permission,nothing.My parents were not pleased but ,well you can't have them put back in.After that I bit every dentist that I could until they started getting wise and wedged my mouth open! :evil: Nowadays I don't bite dentists anymore,although the thought occasionally crosses my mind! :twisted: :twisted:
 
you should definatly mention your diagnosis... i told my dentist and im in a special category of patients at the surgery now... which is used when considering any cosmetic or non cosmetic surgery.

I have an open bite (my front teeth dont meet at all top to bottom) and they wont operate to fix it because i have diabetes... makes things more complicated apparently... (not that i like the idea of them breaking my jaw top and bottom.ewww)

if you have bleeding gums i can highly recommend corsodil mouthwash... (not the daily one). It's quite strong and really sorts out ulcers and gum infections! I used to have a 38% bleedage but i got that down to just 7% in a couple of months!

You must be psychic. I have woken up with very painful front side teeth this morning and on looking, noticed my gums over three teeth are VERY red. I have an appointment for a check up in about 4 weeks, so thought I'd try and tackle problem myself. I'm guessing it's gingivitis, as was told before that I had gum disease.I have just ben trying to Google to find out if something like Corsodyl is okay for us diabetics and if it's any good.When you say "not the daily one" which one do you mean, please, as i thought there was only one type.Thanks in advance.
 
there's two types, Corsodyl... and Corsoldyl Daily. the Corsodyl Daily comes in a bigger bottle and it's a bit cheaper. But the good stuff is slightly more expensive but its good stuff.

You should find it with the "special" mouthwashes like the Colgate Paroxyl (white bottle, not the whitening one though lol)

Another good way to solve bleeding gum it's to FLOSS... when you floss your gums will bleed for a few days but it will stop after a few days if you keep flossing... THEN brush then rinse.
