Re: Depression and diabetes
Hi,
I think when I've looked this up the finding was that more diabetics tend to be depressed than the non-diabetic population. (You can look for research articles on google scholar).
I think that some diabetics get depressed because of the constant relentlessness of dealing with diabetes every minute of every day. Furthermore, you can do everything correctly and sometimes you may still get a random reading which feels very unfair.
Feeling low or depressed is probably part of the acceptance process- at first everything is new and it seems ok but slowly you realise you're stuck with it for life. It took me years to come to terms with having type 1 & sometimes I still get frustrated by it.
In my mind depression and diabetes can maintain one another. By this I mean that if I'm feeling depressed my diabetes control is likely to be worse which in turn makes me feel even worse and depressed.
If you feel really bad then go to your GP and ask for support. They may be able to put you forward for counselling or medication if you feel it is needed. Alternatively seek support here as I'm sure other people will be along to chat soon that may be able to add further advice / thoughts. There are also other websites / forums focused around depression that may help eg Black Dog Tribe, depression uk.
Hopefully the low feelings will pass soon and you will feel like yourself again. I'm sure there are plenty of people here that can relate to what you are feeling so please don't feel like you're alone!
Take care
