Morning all,

I have received a letter about attending a course called Desmond. Gutted that it's a whole day I think that's too long. Also most of the days are Saturday's. Has anyone been on it? The letter says I have a month to book onto one of the dates otherwise my name will be removed from the list. I think I'd rather do online training.

After a busy week at work the thought of doing a whole day training on a Saturday feels me with dread. But I guess after getting a diagnosis on a Friday night at 5pm and leaving the surgery with a computer handout, this....i suppose would be an opportunity to get some actual help and advise from a Healthcare professional # I hate having this thing and... I am missing eating crisps lol@myself
 
I do not wish to sway you from attending the course but when I was offered a place I refused. I have been on two other NHS courses (not for Diabetes) and for me they have been so generic and unutterably patronising that I it has coloured my views.

I will leave it there as other members who have attended will be better able to tell of their experiences. Good luck.
 
I went on one. For the most part it consolidated the information I found on this site.

It wasn't aware of how I should treat minor scratches and the like, in case of infection. Bugs like sugars so if you have a lesion they invite their friends and family to have a party.

The food advice is rubbish. Smaller portions of bread and potatoes, I don't think so.

I took the lunch break to preach LCHF. People had brought sandwiches, lucozade, pies, bananas. I was horrified!
 
I have been told I will receive an invite to one. I am thinking I will go, as it will be good to talk about it in the open and with others going through similar. For me however much I read, I like to hear it from someone. I have emailed local diabetes group, found the link on here and am going to meet them on Tuesday, they have a podiatrist coming to do a talk. Maybe try this and see if there is a local programme where you are.

I am only have my new diabetic appointment on Wednesday, but thought the podiatry talk to good to miss. Good luck, I will also miss crisps! and chips!
 
Sometimes the most benefit is gained by what happens between the seesions on the day like meeting other attendees and networking, gathering info and impressions , ideas etc. ? Tea and coffee ??
 
Thanks guys I think I'm not going to go. I think I will find my own way. Thank you for your comments. Does anyone know if I'm allowed to eat ice pops? I have hayfever and a kids ice pop takes the itchy food of the mouth away.. but I'm too scared to eat one. Thanks Jaz
 
Read the ingredients, no sugars or syrups allowed.

Could you make your own? Some people drink no sugar stuff, I don't so can't recommend.
 
Hi @Jaz006 if you can't be bothered to make your own you could try Disney Freezepops, available at Sainsburys. They are supposed to have zero carbs/sugars, though the ingredients do include Sucralose.



I think your decision not to take up the DESMOND course is right. I did go on it within a week of being diagnosed and it did reassure me that I wasn't about to lose my feet or eyesight or drop dead immediately. The dietary advice wasn't good, though I didn't know that at the time.
I didn't mind spending a day on it as I am retired.
But you will learn more from this forum.
 
Attended the course on Friday, has completely confused me!
 
They were saying you can eat biscuits potatoes bread rice pasta etc - but in moderation.
They even gave out biscuits at tea break !!!!!!
It goes against everything the experiences of our fellow diabetics on here have found to improve and maintain their health (type 2 diabetics).
 
There are plenty of posts that say that the dietary advice is rubbish.
 
The science was good though!
 
At least you will know enough to ignore the dietary advice!
