I have read in the past that there is definitely a link between someone with diabetes and their increased risk of developing either Dementia or Altzheimers.
Research that I did some years ago revealed that the human brain actually has a number of 'Beta' cells within the Brain itself., not sufficient to keep diabetes under control throughout the body, but sufficient Insulin production to attempt to keep the brain functioning at all times, even when the primary beta cells within the pancreas fail as in (Type 1)
These days many treatments for both Dementia and Altzheimers disease are treated by our diabetic medications.
Hope this little information is of some help in your research - Good Luck. - Lazybones
Hi there how are you!Hi there!
Does anyone have experience (or has both) Diabetes and Alzheimers? Or has a family member who is affected by Alzheimers?
Would love to talk to you in regards to a project we're doing to raise awareness at Diabetes.co.uk
Please feel free to private message me or email me at elizabeth@diabetes.co.uk
Thank you again and I hope you are all having a lovely day.
Hi there how are you!
Ihave been typeII since 2002 and diagnosed with vascular dementia in 2010. I was told by the Psychiatrist that assessed me at the time that I had some infarks deep within the white matter of the brain and the only treatment for me was to have better control of my diabetes and its complications. Is this the sort of thing your looking to help with?
@CaptainEarle, is this information still required? Have only just noticed this thread, which seems to have gone into 'hibernation mode'.
Bumping it up, as it seems a shame, as it would appear that diagvd2010 has not had a response.
I have cared for several relatives with dementias over the last 30 years. Would be happy to provide further insights should the OP be interested, but would only in PM.
Hi thereHi there, our researcher is writing a report into the investigation of both and we would very much like to talk to you also about your experiences if this is ok?
