Diabetes and Amnesia

When I walk into a cake shop I kind of forget that I have diabetes.

Are memory problems common with diabetes.

It sometimes happens - once in a restaurant I forgot to ask for a glass of water and only had wine so knocked back my glic and met with a great big couple of gulps of my hubby's full fat lemonade - I just forgot for a second
 
I must have had diabetes for 40 years rather than 3 as I have the memory of a sieve.

Well mostly that's where I first noticed the phenomenon but it has happened in one or two other places like in Devon a while back was confronted by a cream tea in a tea shop and memory just went blank, weird.

Oh yes and then there is the Costa's indecent was found later wondering around with no memory of who or where I was terrible.
 
I have a sister with this problem and she doesn't even have diabetes.
 
I never had a Costa or Starbucks until I was in Prague and had a hypo at train station, Costa Black Forest hot chocolate did the job (I could have taken gluco tabs but were' the fun in that)

I've never eaten a McDonalds burger but did once try an egg Mcmuffin, the egg must have been cooking for 4 hours it was bouncy.

Diabetes and memory problems are firmly connected, and inadequately controlled diabetes can bring about memory problems. The brain keeps running on glucose and mind glucose stockpiling is constrained. To keep up ordinary mind working, individuals with diabetes require a steady supply of glucose from their blood.
 
Not sure what your point is. If by 'inadequate control' you mean frequent or deep hypoglycemic episodes, then I xould understand this, but generally diabetes is marked by excess blood glucose, and i am not sure if this is directly leading to amnesia. Anyone got any evidence on this? I am T2D and spent 10 years at least with elevated bgl's, but held a very demanding engineering post and had to rely on memory going back to my schooldays.

I was going to say something earth shattering here, but I've forgotten what it was..........
 
@Oldvatr I wanted to agree with the first part of your post and laugh at the second just so you know..

My forgetfulness seems to be more topographical as it only happens in certain places and in the proximity of high carb and sugary foods . Oh and in the pub sometimes.
 
I understand completely. My wife accuses me of selective hearing. I blame the filters in my hearing aid, but she's not buying that. I just wish she'd forget it.

I have the same memory loss in sweet shops and walking into a supermarket and pass the chocolate section. Think we should call it Diabetic Amnesia.
 
I only get this on P&O ferries to and from Ireland ,it's the fish and chips that do it

Actually there was an OTC medication that you could use for it, Think it was called something like Milk of Amnesia
 
Actually, I think I am more forgetful now because of being a T1D.
