diabetes and thyroid problems..??

Hiiiii,

i've been having problems with extremely high blood sugar in 20's and 30's over nov/dec with close work with my GP and DN i've got it well down and now have reading's in single figures and teens (yey!)

i know some peeps will cringe at reading in the teens but for me thats pretty good as alot of the time i couldnt even get a reading as my meter just said 'Hi' which for my meter is above 32...

i've also been put on anti-depressant's for 3 months, and now my DN wants to test me for an underactive thyroid..

is there a link between diabetes and thyroid problems?
and also does anyone know if its hereditary as my grandmother was recently treated for it and is on medication?

is there any serious health issues with thyroid problems?

does it affect my diabetes control?

i know this is ten million questions but i'm quite worried about it as i've already inherited diabetes from my fathers side and other health issues from my mothers side too

both are autoimmune disorders so seem to come hand in hand, if you have one autoimmune disorder its very likely u can get another, i too have type 1 and underactive thyroid, for me the thyroid came first after my second pregnancy, then went to normal then after my 3rd child i ended up in ccu with thyrotoxicosis, thus now it doesnt work much at all, my endo believes it to have caused my diabetes,
if u have thyroid probs, once u are diagnosed and on the right dose of meds u shouldnt feel any different at all,
as for running in families ,all my aunts and grandma had it and now my mum does too ,

Thyroid disease is associated with diabetes. I have Type 1 D and autoimmune hypothyroidism.

Autoimmune disease tends to run in families and thyroid disease is more prevalent in females than males. If possible try and ask your DN to test for thyroid antibodies - this will give you some indication whether there is an autoimmune disease process going on.

Depression is a symptom of thyroid disease so it is worth following up with your DN.

I've read of lots of cases where people are diagnosed and treated for 'clinical depression' when in fact they are hypothyroid and do much better when started on thyroid meds. I recommend this website for thyroid disease.... http://www.thyroid-disease.org.uk/

Hi,

thanks for that link its actually very interesting and helpful, im scheduled for blood tests middle of this month and results a week later aswell as my HBA1C so hopefully my thyroid will be fine and my HBA1C will be significantly lower than my last (16.2%) ... thanks for your help x
 
Hi can anyone help please.. Diagnosed 4 year ago type 1, nova rapid 3 times a day lantus 1 a day.. Recently diagnosed with thyrotoxicosis, can anyone help please.

It's funny that autoimmune diseases are proven to be hereditary but I am the first in my family to have had type 1 diabetes (and I too have an underactive thyroid). I sometimes wonder whether my children will inherit an autoimmune disease from me or if not, whether it will skip a generation. Whatever happens I'll accept the blame for it!!
 
There's a genetic component but lots of people will share it. It's not directly inherited in the same way as for example MODY . If you have a certain pattern of genes then you have a risk. So for one of the most common variants only about 5 percent of individuals with it will develop type 1.. What turns that risk into developing T1 and other autoimmune diseases isn't really known. There are lots of candidates and different ones might occur in different people.

Re thyrotoxicosis. I have the opposite but I'm sure that I've seen people on here with hyperthyroid
