Hi

Ive had Diabetes, type 2 for 12 years, which came as a shock at the time, as yes ive always been overweight, but only by a stone or so. anyway the past few years when ive had my eye screening its come back with there are some changes to the back of your eye, theyre ok, but well monitor them. Today i got a call off the doctor telling me that they would like me to see a specialist, as they have spotted someting in my eyes and want it checked out. I was in shock, and never took it all in, but I think he said i had an embolism in my eyes.

My recent hba1c test reading, was 58
and my cholestrol was 4.5

The doctor also said hes going to put me on a small dose of asprin.

Can anyone put my mind at rest, or has anyone else recieved the same news, and what happens? whats the process etc?

Thanks

The basic eye screening is a simple picture of the retina ,if something is spotted that warrants further investigation then you have a more in depth examination.
This will involve the usual eye drops to dilate the pupils and a retinal scan to show a cross section of the retina .
This will be followed by the doctor examining you retina very closely with their own eyes.
This is my experience any way.
Hope all goes well

It could be that they have seen a slight change and they just want to ensure it is nothing more serious. I know it is really worrying, but try not to stress about it, and also let us know how the appointment goes .

I had the same thing a few weeks ago which completely freaked me out, and when I had my appointment yesterday they said it was fine, i just have background retinopathy.

Thanks for the replies, will let you know what happens.

Hi, and welcome to the forum.

I can only relate my father's experience in the U.K. I don't remember his GP being involved, but as the result of a regular diabetic retinopathy check he was referred to his local hospital ophthalmology department. The treatment was done using a lazer, something I have had done for secondary cataracts, and I didn't feel a thing. My father is now 91 and unfortunately his eye problems are more complicated. Even more unfortunate for my father is that high blood sugar is responsible for his eye problems.

An embolism is a blockage and I can only assume that's why he has prescribed asprin as a blood thinner.

I don't know what your doctor says about your recent HbA1c but can I recommend you have a look at the Diabetes.co.uk website which will mention the blood sugar levels and HbA1c to aim for. That can be found at https://www.diabetes.co.uk/what-is-hba1c.html.

All the best.

Thanks David, just waiting now for my doctor to send my letter for the appointment
