Diabetic Hypo Alert Dog

Hi there puppy

I don't have a dog at all ( a cat in fact and he's adorable but fairly unremarkable ).

I just wanted to say, what a lovely story to share! It really cheered me up, sounds like Casper's a real super dog! I had no idea there were hypo (and it seems hyper) dogs out there.

Wish I did have one of them dogs, not that I have hypo problems but it'd be better trained than our dog! Nah, I wouldn't swap our mental spaniel for the world, he's a rescue dog, we got him at 3yrs old complete with some problems but he's great! And I think he appreciates us giving him a 2nd chance too, so loyal and loving.

Hi lovely post about your hypo alert doggy. I myself have 2 yorkies [ freya and gracey. ] theyre blood sisters, same parents but different litters.
1 is an hearing dog [as am severly deaf] she alerts me to the door, car/person on drive, washing machine cycle finished, telephone rings, even hubby comeing home too!
The other alerts me when I go too lethargic groggy/sleepy licks my face, even nibbles gently on my ear lobes and pushhes under my chin to alert me. Wont stop till I respond to her.
They are my girls and best friends would be lost without them both!
Its true doggies are man/woman's best friend.
Going to give them a cuddle, they deserve it! Anna.x

Great postings - dogs are SO clever arn't they? Must be fantastic to have your dog alert you to hypos. You must have a wonderful relationship with Casper.
As I mentioned on my introduction I have 3 Jack Russells - Dotty, Dinky & Dusty. When my severe allergic reactions were happening a lot (before I was on steroids) Dotty would sometimes refuse to get out of the car & go for a walk. If I lifted her out as soon as I took her lead off - however far away we were - she would just run back!! I often wondered if she sensed something was going to happen.
Whatever they are wonderful companions & the only thing that's got me out from under the covers at times over the last couple of years!!

Will just add that we have found the link to how and why gracey is doing what she does.
When I am HIGH blood sugared my skin and body smell is sweet soapy/perfumey scented.
However when I am LOW blood sugared things change with my skin and body scent.
I smell like cider apples and can go very odd in behaviour, either sitting in a trance or wanting to just go to sleep and not be disturbed at all.
This is when gracey just WONT leave me alone, keeps on n on n on n on at me till I respond despite me KEEP
pushing her away, grumpily and disinterested in her. She just WONT give up getting MORE and MORE insistent on forcing me to respond to her.
Its a scent thing with her, she is a real terrier in personality, nature, instinct and habits.
Constantly burying things our socks tops even [nicked out of the washing machine!] then digs them up weeks later.
The 'girls' are my constant faithful loyal and dedicated best friends and companions.

Great to hear this we have two toy poodles one has been trained for my husband as he is deaf, and mine just took over telling me when something is not right especially if I have a hyo or hyper he licks me and barks until I come round, once I was really bad and went and told my husband.. I have found toys are easy to train.

i have a Jack Russel,then a Jack Russel cross fox hound, i am a bad diabetic and have quite a few black outs, sometimes Petit Mals, i always wake up where i collapse ie; bathroom, sofa,end of bed,computer, when i come around and he is always near me, never far,but he is whinning, crying, i come around and always hear him, i know he does not stop until i come around, i never now how long it has been, but i am aware of him loudly whining looking at me from a few feet, when i get up he always rushes straight up with his little bob tail wriggling, and wont leave me until i am safely in bed and he is right next to me, i live on my own with just my precious dogs.The bigger galoot Scamp he is already on the bottom of the bed, or if i am downstairs he is in his bed, he never leaves me ever, but he wont come to me if i have collapsed, it is always Jock, my loyal Jack Russel, and he has never been trained, he is seven years old, and i have been a diabetic for five years, but it has only been this last year that i have been blacking out.I have never ever come around with Jock not been there, and always i last thing i hear whilst i am gaining my composure is him whining or a soft woof woof.I think that if he could work the phone he would, every time my phone rings and i don`t get up quickly enough to answer or if i just ignore it, he will get very animated and will bark at me until i get up and answer,it happens quite often that the phone rings downstairs, i feel sick and am in bed, i don`t want to answer, but!!!! they are a incredible breed !

These posts are really great. Dogs are just wonderful and we really underestimate what they can do. I have had Casper now for 9 and 1/2 months now and no diabetic collapses at all. He came from a wonderful charity called Medical Detection Dogs (check their website) there are some fantastic videos and stories about how dogs are detecting for diabetics and for certain types of cancer. They use all breeds of dogs and have labs, spaniels, yorkies and Jack Russells, different people need different sizes of dog, it is more about the bond and the relationship rather than the breed.
