I am 16 years old and was diagnosed with type 1 4 days ago. A few days before being diagnosed with diabetes I had dehydration, always wanting to drink. This lead to always going to the toilet. I never wake up during the night so it was strange when I was waking up 3 or 4 times a night and going to the toilet. This only happened over about 3 nights but my mum caught on that these could be the symptoms of diabetes (mums intuition she says) so she booked me an appointment at my local GP the next day. I found out I had 24.5 bloodsugar and ketones in my urine so the GP sent me straight to the hospital. I had tests done there and within about 24hours of my mum saying we will just get you checked out thinking it would be nothing, I had been diagnosed with diabetes and had my first insulin injection which I was made to do myself. Was a tiny shock at first but I took it really well, I thought theres no point getting upset over something I now cannot change. So ever since I have been researching trying to add to the little knowledge I know at the moment, I realise its just going to be a learning curve so it will take time. Seeing the nutritionist? in a few days which will cover a lot of questions I want to ask about my diet.
Right now Im on Humalong Mix25 injecting before breakfast and before tea.Im still at around 14 blood sugar so ive been told to increase insulin from 8 units in morning 6 at night to 10 and 8 and if im still not in single figures then increase to 12 and 10. After decreasing my blood gradually into single figures my nurse is going to put me onto a new regime which I think is the inject then eat, as it fits my lifestyle a lot better than what Im on at the moment. So just going with the flow taking it in my stride

It seems like I am reading my own story, I have been diagnosed few days ago and theres been only 2 occasions when I was single figure, is there anything you have been told you stay away eating?

Havent really been told to stay away from anything yet. But I havent seen the nutritionist yet, I see her on monday. Just been told to have in moderation. But Ive decided myself and a lot will agree that its best to completely stay away from full sugered things such as coke and other high sugar food and drinks.

Your symptoms were exactly as mine were, extreme thirst and frequent urination meaning little sleep during the night. The nurse is talking about basal/bolus insulin regime which should help you bring those bg readings down and give you greater flexibility of what and when you eat.
