Hi there, I just found out I have pre-diabetes but the general advice is still the same - just no meds...Hi there, I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes on Thursday over the phone and all my GP said was to Google it and change my diet! I have until the end of September to get my reading down or I have to start using medication. The problem is I feel very overwhelmed with it and Google is full of conflicting information especially when it comes to carbs. I was a bit of a carb-monster before diagnosis but now I don't know what I should be doing.
I've ordered a glucose monitor thingy and strips from Amazon and have got a couple of books coming too. I have had what I call 'funny turns' for the past year or so and most recently last night but now I'm starting to wonder if it is a hypo. I feel like I'm going to faint and become incredibly light headed but after something to eat and a good sleep I am back to normal, though saying that I still feel quite shaky this morning.
I have a lot of weight to lose, I'm talking over 15 stones to go, so my diet definitely needed to change as I was addicted to sugar and high fat food. I don't really know what to eat now either especially breakfasts. I've been having eggs on toast but I worry about the bread even if it is wholemeal. I used to have oatsosimple golden syrup flavour but obviously they are out. My diet was absolutely shocking so I am not surprised to be diabetic now but I am not going to weep and wail about it, I am going to change to a healthier lifestyle.
Well thanks for reading all my waffle, I hope you can help me with my questions xx
Hi, I've just had a similar experience a week ago. Dr who is not my regular dr gave me the results and said ' you need to cut out sugar' and he will see me in three months. I'm an adted child and did not know until recently that I have diabetes on both sides of my family. Although I went looking on the Australian site, the advice here has really helped. Unfortunately any kind of even complex carb seems to elevate my levels, so I'm going to go low carb and see how at works. It really is working out what your body can tolerate on an individual basis. I'm not in love with my glucometer but I'm very grateful to have it

Yes I'm an Aussie, second week and I'm struggling, another visit to the dr for a referral to a diabetes clinic and he's reminded me again that I might need medication. I have no prob taking meds if I need to, I don't know why it annoys me when he reminds me. I know it's a grieving stage I'm down with my daughter and she's started a low carb diet again also and has been making me yummy low carb things which has helped. This diagnosis comes at the end of a really rough 12 months, my mother was killed in a car accident my father in ICU for three months and all kinds of other things happened as well. I'm just feeling like it's just not fair right now to have to deal with yet more change. I know this is part of the process but grrrrr thanks anyway all for listening to my wingeAre you Aussie?
