Hi all,
I was diagnosed in August as Type 1 in a really dramatic way, most of which I can’t even remember myself and am just now getting back to normal life whereby the reality is finally setting in. Back in the summer I thought I had a cold over a weekend but it didn’t improve and by Thursday was acting completely weird which caused my family to call me an ambulance. On the journey to hospital I crashed into a coma, which we now know was obviously a severe dka with my blood sugar registering at over 30. My blood ph was supposedly so low that their machine was saying it was unreadable and I was in a coma for two weeks and needed a tracheostomy to wake me up. During this time I developed complications with my kidneys and lungs, thankfully both of which have now pretty much gone back to normal, but was in ITU for 4 weeks and the hospital for a month.

It’s been a lot to take in, and have only just gone back to work in the new year after taking the time to recover from the hospital, which work was really great about. I’ve been at home for the past couple of months so was able to get into a solid routine, but now going back to work has made me realise first of all how lucky I was to survive the initial drama but also how much thought has to go into planning everything. I’ve just had my first HbA1c result since diagnosis at 38 coming down from the 119 in hospital which is obviously great, so am now hoping that I’ll be able to keep it up now I’ve gone back to real life.
Just wanted to join the forum as it seems a great place to discuss all aspects of diabetes as there is just so much to take in even after having these past months to come to terms with it.

Welcome @dufa13 . You've certainly been through the mill! Diabetes will become a way of life. You're back at work now and will soon get into a routine.

I don't know how stressful your workplace can be (hopefully not too much) but remember that stress can affect blood sugars. Well let's face it, you'll know by now that lots of things can affect it! Just be prepared for ups and downs, and know that it happens to everyone at some point. Keep your test kit handy, especially in the first weeks/months.

Hopefully it'll be a smooth run for you from now on, but if there's any problems, just ask. You'll find lots of information and suggestions on the forum, so make use of us all.

HI and welcome to the forum - what a horrible way to find out you have diabetes! Hope it all stays on track from here.
