Diagnosed two wks ago, really confused

I was first Diagnosed as Type 2 Diatbetic 25 yrs ago, with a reading of 18.3..I was terrified,my Doctor wanted to put me on medication immediatley,I asked him what other options I had. He told me choosing a better eating program would work as long as I stayed with guidelines. He gave me 1 month to try it and see what I could do.I went home and read everything I could on food choices that would be suitable for me. and when I went back 1 month later my reading was 10.2..He was so impressed with me and I was so happy..Back then there wasn't any Computers to help me I got books from the Library.
I continued with my eating and had made a lot of changes from my old habits, I changed from white flour to wholemeal, and stopped having sugar in my tea or coffee.I started eating more vegies, and steamed them ..cutting back on potato or any starchy veg.I reduced my Fruit intake to 1 piece a day.and cut out all soft drink/Pop/or any high sugar drinks. and on my next visit 1 month later my reading was 8.1,I remember the Doctor saying aim at staying below 8 and you will be okay...I was determined to get in the 7s. and a month later on my next visit I was 7.3. and so on it went .
I then purchased my own machine to test my own sugar daily and have done so ever since 1 time a day first thing in the morning..my readings now vary from 5.7 to 6.8 , depending on what I have eaten the day before. I hope this story will inspire someone, but do what you do with a Doctors approval . My reading today was 6.1...smiles

I am pretty sure you only tell the DVLA once you are insulin dependant as you are more likely to be at risk of hypos rather than hypers.
Dr or diabetic clinic will give you perscription for lancets only if you are insulin dependant (well in Dorset anyway)
You do not need to test your levels before you get into a car to drive - Really you only test your levels if you feel odd or if you are having quick acting insulin with your meals and of course when you wake
To be honest if you are on tablets rather than insulin the meter is more of a tool to help you understand your blood sugar levels and the effect that food, mood, exercise etc has on your body.
Again i cannot stress enough about not having large meals - it makes it even harder for your body to deal with digestion
