Hi i got diagnosed with type 2 diabetes today ,although i have grown up around it all my life as my whole maternal family has diabetes ,i guess the reality is really sinking in and i feel really angry about it all and really kind of scared in a weird way of being properly diagnosed
im 23 and basically registered with a new doctor 2 months ago and a routine blood test picked up the abnormality so ive been trying to follow a low Gi diet and have quit smoking and drinking in hope it would be able to be managed by diet alone
but today my doctor has placed me on metformin and is refering me to Desmond just wondered if anyone on here has been to Desmond and what it was like / if it helped them deal with things better .
I kind of feel ive been dropped in the deep end and cant swim.,i just feel miserable at the moment ,
plus im really worried my friends wont understand as ive gone from a bit of a party girl to non smoker tea total in 8 weeks which im quite happy with but im worried about going out with them for first time and relapsing back to my old ways .
ali  :?

Welcome to the forum ,Ali, and hopefully someone who has been on a Desmond course will be along to share their experience of it.
I think we all felt like you do to begin with so feel free to vent about it.It is a life change but it is a life change for the better.

Hi Ali and welcome to the forum, it's quite normal to feel upset and angry when first diagnosed I think we've all been there. Have a read round the various forums you will see life goes on, you don't have to be teetotal if your diabetic, just don't overdo it and be careful in your choice drinks and make sure any mixers you use are diet as in diet coke etc.
Desmonds is quite a contentious issue on this forum and has been featured in a recent thread have a look. viewtopic.php?f=1&t=10174&hilit=Desmonds

Hi Ali
now you can enjoy a fun lifesyle without the toxic effects of alcohol and nicotine. If that turns your friends away, Were they worth having in the first place?
do learn from this forum, you are very young and need to protect your health.
