I am now diet controlled and understand that I lose free prescriptions but do I still get free eye tests and flu jabs? Last time I collected a prescription I explained and was told that as long as I still held a current medical exemption card I didn't have to pay. Not sure what's right and what isn't ?
 
I came off Metformin in July, my surgery has texted me to say come in for a free flu jab. Hadn't thought about losing free prescriptions (but haven't told Doc I've stopped statins), must check the situation myself.

But maybe blood pressure/cholesterol drugs wouldn't get me free prescriptions ...

Confused now!
 
As long as you have an exemption certificate that is on date you will be able to obtain the benefits.

The NHS like every other Government service in this country is completely incompetent and therefore there is no simple way for the certification your GP originally gave to be withdrawn.

In the end it will be down to the individual to make the decision whether or not to continue using the exemption.
 
"By the rules", you continue to be eligible for free prescriptions, in the same way as before, until your current certificate expires, but you will/would be unable to renew it.

We all eventually trip over the age trigger 60, and of course there are other circumstances qualifying for free prescriptions, but you're fine for now.

(Rules in Scotland and Wales differ.)
 
If you are registered as a diabetic you are exempt from NHS charges, but yes you need to apply for the exemption card.
 
Does that mean that now I am diet controlled I should give mine back?
I wonder what the receptionist at the docs would say to that.. hmmm might just give it a go.
I hasten to say I have only used it to get my diabetes meds which I only took for 3 weeks.
 
If type2s that are now diabetic med free, they can continue to use the exception card until it runs out.
But type 2 can only get a certificate or re new if taking diabetic meds
 

No. You can continue to "enjoy" the exemption as long as your current certificate is valide. Meds free, it would not be renewed.

Off-topic, so I apologise up front, but I a proud to say that aside from as a minor, I have never had a free prescription in my life. Of course, that will change when I cross the older age threshold of course, but it is my aim to get there with that statement intact.
 
Have had a confirmation email to say that I can use the exemption until the current card expires as others have said. As I only use my script for lancets and test strips I will continue to use it as both these are diabetic related and allow me to keep my control and not have to take meds.
