Hi all new to this Forum diagnosed with Type 2 in 1999 and all that time did not take Meds, my sugar levels shot up doc said I had to go in Meds to bring it down, my daughter got breast cancer in November 2015 and I said to the doctor could it have been stress because my levels had been fine for 12 years , she said no but I am convinced it was stress she said that I had put on a stone in 3 years so it was probably the weight, so now trying to lose weight but everybody says don't eat carbs, try fasting don't know what to do, confused.

Stress will increase your cortisol levels (the "stress" hormone) and will increase your blood glucose; sorry, I am a biochemist so know a bit about all this! The weight may have been the deciding factor if you went above your personal fat level in your liver and/or pancreas so you really need to cut the carbs and calories to get rid of the extra weight and hopefully get your glucose back down again.

I know my glucose goes up when I am stressed.

Cutting the carbs and / or fasting will be the fastest way to lose weight. You don't HAVE to fast but even delaying BF or skipping one meal once in awhile will help. Every little bit helps. Did you maybe start eating more comfort food while your daughter was sick hence causing the weight gain?

Low carbing is easy and very satisfying as far as I'm concerned. Much more energy, better blood markers, lower blood sugar, lower weight.

You did well to control your diabetes without meds for 12 years, so something must have changed now.

What was your last HbA1c that has triggered the need for meds, and what sort of HbA1c levels did you have before?

Stress is a major factor in raised blood sugar levels, but more so is diet. Maybe you unconsciously ate more "naughty" foods during your daughter's treatment. We are all prone to comfort eating at times like that. You can't do anything about the stress, but you can perhaps have a good look at what you are eating. Perhaps you could keep a food diary for at least a month, writing down exactly what you eat and drink and maybe you can spot something. If you tell us what you typically eat in a day we may also spot something to help you.

Thank you so much for all your help, my friend is on the 5 2 fasting and has recommended this diet is anybody on here on it and is it safe for diabetics.

Losing that little but if extra weight is the key I think, but stress is most definitely a big factor too.
