Different terms for HBA1C?

My husband has just come back from the docs with a print out of his blood test.

I was looking to see what his HBA1C was as it seems to be the measurement people use but I cannot see it anywhere on the sheet.

There are a whole list of tests with numbers and letters and lots of result numbers but non saying HBA1C and there is no result with a % with it? Should it be there or is it called by another acronym??

The doc said he was doing amazing with his new low carb diet, but said it may be a bit too low :roll: and to maybe have some porridge for breakfast. How we are supposed to keep the bg's down I don't know!? She said she was worried he would lose muscle?! I think it would use the spare fat before it started eating muscle!

There are two possible answers I can think of.
Firstly, it may have included a fasting blood test but not an HbA1c if it was a battery of tests. If sdo, it would be a number anywhere from 5.something (good) to the teens (not so good) with mmols/l written next to it.
Next, the printout could have the HbA1c result in the new IFCC units, where 42 is about 6% in the old currency. This number is in mmols/mol, so looks similar but again is in different units to the fasting blood test (the one you can read on your own meter)

I believe it was supposed to be a fasting blood test but hubby didn't realise and had his breakfast

The first line is Plasma Glucose level which is 5.5.

There is nothing with IFCC

His 5.5 mmol/L was great so happy with that.

Yeah, good result. Probably didn't do an HbA1c test then on that occasion. Presumably you know his HbA1c on diagnosis? If not, you should ask your doctor. You need it so when you have future tests (should have an HbA1c at least once a year, according to how well he's perceived to be doing) you can compare results to check progress.

He was diagnosed years ago and has never been able to get his bg's down - that was before we knew about low carbing though

I did ask him to ask the doctor what his previous reading was so we could get a comparison (it would be high - his meter was always into the teens before we started LC) He is not as clued up on it all as I am though He just eats what I tell him to now!

JeanneMum, we are delighted, I don't know if you seen any of my previous posts but he had serious problems with neuropathy and the LC'ing pretty much knocked that on the head immediately

I owe most of it to a friend I met whilst having coffee one day who told me about carbs and Diabetes but I have to say a massive thanks to you guys for your advice and help too. :thumbup:
 
That's a great effort topsec. They will have a record of his last Hba1C though, and you could phone docs for it. It will give you a really good indication of progress then when he gets his next one.
 
Oh and I forgot to say she has taken him off 1 of his metformin, he just has to take a morning one now (500mg)

He is on other meds for BP and cholesterol. We will tackle those issues when we have the bg well under control! I think both those are being helped by LC too?
 

I believe they are. He is in a great situation right now. I am so pleased for you both.
 
The LC should help him lose weight, and that will help tackle the BP. Mine went from average 150/85 to 117/75 last test, no meds. :thumbup: My cholesterol went from 5.5 to 3.8 with no change in the 20 mg dose of statins I take, again it seems down to losing a bit of weight (LC) and getting generally fitter (a bit of exercise). I'm 62 by the way, so age is no barrier to getting fitter!
 
He's 66

We have always been generally fit but it does go in peaks and troughs! We are currently in training for a charity cycle ride we do in Texas where we have to do 200 miles in 2 days (thankfully pretty flat!) We did 65 on Saturday and he could eat what he wanted en route because he was using all the carbs/sugars doing the pedalling!

Your results are very encouraging Grazer, I shall tell him
