Good Afternoon,
I am currently employed at HMP. I am type one diabetic. I have normally very good control of my condition.
Last year whilst working on a prison wing I was attacked by a prisoner. I was not hurt and defended myself.
Unfortunately there was an investigation into my actions and I was found guilty of assaulting the prisoner and using unnecessary force.
As a result I was demoted, took a substantial cut in wages, lost pension contributions and was plunged into debt.
Only afterwards did I speak with my diabetic practitioner who informed me of hyperglycaemia and “diabetic rage”. My blood sugar was indeed raised at the time.
Having never experienced this I was not able to recognise the signs.
I am now nearing 12 months after the punishment and am looking to redeem myself, recoup my lost wages and pension.
I have never experienced “diabetic rage “ before or since and have now better testing capability with a sensor on my arm.
I wish to return to full operational duties and wonder if there’s any advice out there as to where I stand with my employer both legally and morally. Thank you in advance.
