Dizziness, inflamation, peeing etc etc, advice?

Ok, so I was diagnosed type 2 mid December after being taken into hospital with chest pains and some weird sensations in various parts of my body and since I was discharged from hospital a week later they have gradually subsided and been forgotten, until yesterday

Since lunchtime yesterday I have had dizziness, puffed up fingers with some redness to them, a dry mouth, constant thirst and been p*ssing like a race horse,slight shortness of breath and numb lips to name but a few coming and going, been to the out of hours doctor at the local hospital who tested urine and blood pressure and said all okay and to see my doctor when I have symptoms (had symptoms while sitting in there talking to him),trouble is I've mentioned my puffy hands and the colour changes in various parts of me several times to both my doctor and diabetic nurse before and had no response, medication is 3 x 500 metformin and 40 simvastatin daily, bs has been between 4.5 and 6.2 over the last few days which is about normal for me it would seem...
 
How long have you been taking Simvastatin ,Andy? these could be side effects from Simvastatin.When you next see the doctor ask him to look up the side effects in the BNF (British National Formulary) also Metformin which can also have side effects.

Hi, been taking Simvastatin since diagnosis in hospital, I had thought of that but the only thing I can see is that for some reason the symptoms tend to surface about lunchtime and I've been taking the Simvastatin at around 9pm with my last metformin, the time it tends to start doesn't tie in with a time I take any of the medication, but I will ask her, thanks...
 
Hi Andy,
Although it appears to be pretty rare, skin irritation and discolouration can be a side effect of metformin. The puffiness could simply be the result of the skin irritation. I would get your doctor to check this out. As Sue said, the BNF should list every known side effect of your meds.

It just occurred to me that your symptoms could also be due to a food allergy. I have a friend who is allergic to shellfish and his face and hands become blotchy and swollen just as you have described. It doesn't have to be shellfish - could be almost anything that you have developed an allergic reaction to.
 
Thanks for the answers guys, just raked out the cupboards and the only thing that I have found that could be a possible is perhaps my chewing gum?

I was in the process of giving up smoking when I was taken into hospital and have been chewing quite a lot of gum instead of the ciggies, its billed as sugar free on the wrapper and all looks good until you read into the ingredients and google them, sweeteners included are Sorbitol and Maltitol, gave them a google and they dont look good so maybe there's my problem, ah well, cut them out as well just to be sure...
 
So off I went to the doctors this morning for another fine diagnosis, to be told....

It isn't worth worrying about whatever it is as diabetics get these things, and letting it bother me is the last thing I should be doing, despite the light headedness I should continue driving and working as normal and it will go away (despite the same symptoms putting me in hospital for a week just before Christmas). :lol:

Sorry, but that really pisses me off! A doctor's oath states,'first do no harm' not 'let's do nothing at all'! :evil:
 
I was on the phone to another surgery as soon as I got back, the trouble with living in a rural area are there are only 2 within a sensible distance and they have, it would appear some sort of agreement over not taking patients from each other, so now it's a case of going to see some administrator to see if they will let me move surgeries, if not then it's through to the complaints procedure and a lengthy process no doubt, if these people were employed within any normal private business they would end up sacked very quickly, its only the NHS and tax payers funding that keeps these idiots (I know their in the minority) in work
 
Good for you,Andy.I wish you success in getting some sort of closure on this.Complain loudly and then maybe you can change doctors.
 
Shortness of breath + numb lips + dry mouth sounds like an allergic reaction (anaphylaxis)

You could try eating whatever it was and see if it happens again, though maybe you shouldn't do that without someone there...
 
Well, here we go again, just eating tea (beef, broccoli, cauli and cabbage) and lost my appetite in a flash, blurred vision, itching hands turning red, stiffness in fingers and knees and generally feeling like ****...

I've got the administrator of the local trust to agree to me changing surgeries but cant process the paperwork until tomorrow, guess I just try to hang on in there until then and hope I can get to see a doctor :?

i suffer from loads of allergies, have u tried anti histamines?? if these help then its definately some sort of allergy

Well not TOO loudly or they will badmouth you to the new surgery.

Would be helpful if you could get copies of your notes, these sound like the sort of clueless monkeys who would conceal information from you.

Where I used to live was ruled by a Health Centre whose GPs varied from quite competent to entirely clueless (guess which one I got?) The good news was that the general mediocrity was noticed and a couple of young guys set up an alternative practice. The bad news was that they quickly became so popular they had to stop taking new patients.

This does sound like an allergic reaction, either to your meds or some foodstuff or environmental factor. Since you've reported it before it would be useful to find out what they have written in your notes about it.
 
So I been and seen a doc at the new surgery today, who thinks its a virus, but cant explain the redness and swelling or the blurred vision, so bloodtest tomorrow morning and booked me in to see the diabetic nurse at the same time to see how things are going, certainly better so far than the other place, fingers crossed they get to the bottom of it this time...
