Hi,

I am 24 years old. very fit, workout 4-6 times a week do cardio and track my food.

Ive never had blood sugar issues in the past, however my routine bloodwork this time came back off.

Im from Australia and my numbers read this;

5.7mmol FASTING

In years previous these were my readings...
2014 - 4.2 FASTING
2015 - 5.0 RANDOM
2016 - 4.5 RANDOM
2018 - 5.7 FASTING (NOW)

My cholesterol and everything else is excellent, could this have just been a random occurence? I was fasting for about 10~ hours, should i buy a blood glucose meter and test on my own?

Many thanks

I doubt you have prediabetes. The machines have an error of around 15%. Washing your hands and using a new lancet can improve the precision. In any case a reading of 5.7 is normal. My wife occasionally tests herself, as do some of my work colleagues and they are usually around the 5s.

These results were from a blood test from a lab however.

If you're fit and in your 20s, then the likeliness of developing prediabetes (the precursor to Type 2 diabetes) is extremely low. Plus, the reading is normal. In my opinion, you've got nothing to worry about, but if you are concerned then make an appointment with your doctor.

This page shows you the BG ranges for prediabetes and diabetes.
It does not give a waking (which I guess is considered as fasting) target for non-diabetes but you are within the pre-prandial target.

Those results would put me at pre diabetic
The page says pre-prandial is between 4.0 and 5.9 for non diabetic and your fasting value (5.7) is within that range.

There is no data for non-diabetic "on waking" which is the closest to fasting.

I can see you are looking at the chart for diagnosing diabetes, but no doctor woul diagnose even pre-diabtes on one reading. A multitude of things affect fasting plasma blood tests, from stress to disturbed sleep and everything in between. As you are clearly worried you need to ask for the correct diagnostic test, which is an HbA1c.

Just going to agree with the previous post & state that if you're worried then your best bet is to ask your doctor for an HbA1c. Too many things can impact a fasting glucose & home meters are too unreliable for a diagnosis.

I got my HBA1C test back, it was 5.4.

My total cholestrol was 3.4, LDL was 1.5 and HDL was 1.7

Should i worry? to be fair last 3 months ive eaten reaallly bad (I bodybuild and i have periods of cutting calories and other times of eating more, i still eat better than average person but its maybe 1-2 BIG meals)

My dad who is 50~ has a HBA1C of same value which has me worried.

Pre diabetes starts at an hba1c of 6. Why do you think you have diabetes?

All completely normal.. no need to worry.. does your dad have Type 2?

Well obviously he doesn't with an HBA1c of 5.4% just like you don't either... it's so far not compulsory for the over the 50's to get Type 2 diabetes.

As the others have said, that HbA1c shows you are a healthy non-diabetic, and your cholesterol is fine.
