Hi there my 7 year old had a series of blood tests last week as she is very small for her age. Random blood sugar level came back at 8. From what i understand only just above normal limit but my doctor quite concerned that she has diabetes. We have had a fasting bgl done today but eont know results till next week.

Has anyones little ones been diagnosed with diabetes with bgl of only 8?

The guidelines for diagnosis are:
- a random blood glucose > 11 or
- a fasting blood glucose > 7.

8 is perhaps a little high for a random blood glucose for a non diabetic, but having said that, it's perfectly possible for a non diabetic to get a spike like that - had she just eaten something really sugary/carby?

I don't think the random blood glucose can mean a lot & if your doctor is waiting a week to give you the results of the fasting blood glucose it doesn't sound like he's that concerned either.

Have you noticed any symptoms of diabetes:
- weight loss
- lots of thirst
- lots of urination
- exhaustion
- thrush

Hopefully not & it is just a random spike. Wait to see what your doctor says next week about the fasting bg.

Best wishes x

Thanks for your reply. No sugary or carb food at all before the test. She refused lunch just prior to test and had been swimming for an hour before the test as well... fingers crossed fasting is ok.

She seems thinner than usual and she didnt have much meat to begin with. Is quite up and down in moods but no lots of thirst or frequent urinating.
