Type 1 Does a dose from a fresh insulin pen feel 'better' to one from a pen that's a week or two old?

Hi Everyone,

I am quite new to this diabetes thing and this is my first post.

I have been T1 for about a year now and wanted to ask a question.

Towards the end of a Novorapid pen, the last few doses, I tend to feel sluggish, glum and irritable, and struggle to think in a straight line. My BG is a little higher than I would expect, about 0.5-1.0 so nothing worthy of note.

First dose from the fresh new pen and I feel bright as a button.

Is this common or is it coinidence?

Thanks
C.

It is not something I have experienced but I have a couple of thoughts.

You mention getting a "fresh pen". Does this mean you have prefilled pens or do you mean a "fresh cartridge"?
I never used pre-filled pens. (That's just my strong dislike of throwing anything away and wanting to keep everything as small as possible.)

- are you getting a full dose towards the end? If you have a spare pen (which you should have even if they are not pre-filled), it may be worthwhile trying that out. Alternatively, leave the last 10u or so in the pen rather than trying to squeeze the last few drops of insulin out.
- I assume as a, relatively, recent t1er, your cartridges/pens last a few weeks. During this time your insulin is not kept in the fridge (which is exactly what is advised). It may be possible that the insulin is starting to go off. Again, changing cartridge/pen a little earlier may help..
