I started yesterday, new year new start. I've low carbed before but not <30g. I'm enjoying it so far. Waiting for carb flu though.

He's so generous with his videos. I'm waiting for my book order to arrive. I actually think I love him lol, he should run the NHS

Any tips? Success stories?
 
I didn't really get a good handle on my diabetes until I read his book about 4 years ago.

You might not get carb flu, but if you do, drink plenty of water and use some extra salt.
 
Good luck. Just try it and see how it goes. And I would say, don't be afraid of adapting if adapting works.

He gives you very good discipline, and that's easy to switch back on again any time.
 
30g carb would be ketogenic LCHF and lots of info here about that.. 'atkins induction' is online and free if you search, it has a food list, recipes and menu,
as @robert72 said, a bit more salt because you will flush fluid in LC and you have cut out junk/processed food, a major source of salt normally.
I go by the rule, there is no such thing as too much olive oil

Make sure you eat enough fats while Dr B-ing, or you'll just lose weight and lose weight (my family can't see me when I turn sideways). I found Jenny Ruhl's calculator really useful as a framework (below). Find nice ingenious ways of eating cream/butter/whatever that you really like. V imp to find good food that you can eat in delicious ways.

A bonus is that some people feel super-charged while in ketosis. And it does (whisper it) seem to give you a bit of a safety cushion against hypos.

Hey @Butterflykeri how are you doing?

I'm on day 3 now and enjoying it so far. My blood sugars have really stabilised already! You?
 
Day 2 for me of the 30g of carbs, yesterday my bloods were good but dropped into the 3s a few times, think that's my basal though as had only had one unit of bolus at breakfast! Have taken one unit less of basal today and so far my post prandial spikes are reduced to approx 0.5

And not hungry! Would like to loose stone and half and hope this can help
 
If you are interested, all that Dr B is doing is reintroducing what used to be the normal way to treat diabetes in the early part of the last century. Cut out nearly all carbs and move the body over to a fat based energy system. It is also what bodybuilders do when trying to cut for competition when reducing bodyfat.

While I find Dr B slightly annoying, I have now spent the last six months eating in a ketogenic fashion and it is very effective both for weight loss and blood sugar management, so I recommend it to both those who have diabetes and those who want to improve their body composition.

Yes to that - and a lot of Dr B's precepts are the reassertion of common sense. Perhaps because his treatment grew out of detailed clinical observation, first on himself and then on his patients. He has so much clinical experience by now; and he observes closely and pays attention to differing results.

His motto in the book is, What works, works.

I like the practical detail of his approach. I think he goes off the deep end with the eating regime, but one can modify that.

Most of it just makes such good sense.

Edit: I mean *I* go off the deep end with the eating regime. It works; but it screwed up my cooking amd eating. I found it very hard to adapt normal real recipes to 6-12g carb a helping; so I ended up coking meat or fish on its own and eating lots of boiled veg.

I need a bit more, say 40g/day, to cook food I really like.

How do you guys cope with low blood sugar or hypos?
 
I have a tendency to over compensate when I go low. Must stop panicking
 
The fact that I now graze into a hypo rather than plummet makes it easier to treat One or two Dextros usually sorts it.
 
It very much depends on why I am having the hypo. Always use dextrosols and usually two or three will sort me. I'd love one to be enough, but I've never seen that work for me.
