I told the DVLA back in april i was going onto insulin when i got diagnosed told them before i had actually started it, you dont pay anything each time its renewed or for any reports. The only cost i think i had was to post the form back and get new photos done. My car premium has not changed as well. I see my diabetic doctor every 3 months and the nurse at the moment each month or so but as far as i know doesnt mean anything in relation to me driving and they are happy for me to drive.

I see my Hospital about my diabetes every 6 mnths. I contacted DVLA as soon as I was diagnosed and have just had my 3rd 3 yr licence. Doesn't cost me anything, just have to fill out a form, they then contact the hospital and because I have never suffered a severe hypo ( Needed assistance because unconsious ) I have been granted it every time. ( Thank goodness )

The form this time had a little more to it but the extra bits were'nt relevant to me. So only filled in the forms that were relevant. ( I dont have sight problems and dont drive HGV, I think thats what the extra bits were about!

I must say that since 2010 it seems the DVLA are doing their best to revoke licenses. I have had alot of hypos in almost 40yrs most during the night this did not stop them refering me to one of their GP's and reducing my license to one year. I have re-applied back in October 2011 I was then asked to see my consultant with an appointment in this case I had only just seen him the week before (March 2012) so was refused an appointment. DVLA got him to fill in their response form, this month I have been asked for an eye test.... Hey up I have a full range of tests every year incl. retinopathy screening. Yet I still have to see their optician, I know they have to make sure we are fit to drive but does any other group go through these rigourous checks where they seem to change the guidelines each year. Well I'll have to wait and see opticians tomorrow then my retinopathy is due some time in July, can I have a break after driving since 17 years of age which is the same time I was diagnosed so here comes 57 and I would notify them if I thought I was not fit. I bet my license is revoked!....

Sorry to go on but DVLA is right up my nose at the moment. Appeal if you have good reason I did in 1974 and it was only in 2011 I was reduced to one year. Talk to your consultant he knows your control levels if he thinks your fit to drive then appeal asking the DVLA to contact your consultant.

When I was diagnosed didn't have any problems with my driving licence, but I was told by my consultant not to drive until I knew how my insulin reacted and I was stable... Since then no problems with renewing my licence, and no cost at all to have it renewed, you only pay for name changes and I think if your photo needs renewing..

A lot of people do however needlessly get more problems than they need due to how they answer some of the questions, by answering when asked about hypo's getting confused with what is a serious hypo, which is basically in the DVLA eye's when if a paramedic/doctor had to be called to treat your hypo, or a if a 3rd party hadn't intervened with treatment you would have landed up in A&E/paramedic called!

Apparently with the new changes to the licencing, I could if I chose apply for my HGV, and with all my data from my pump and blood glucose meter, which shows that not only do I test regularly but control is excellent and I maintain full hypo awareness I would have no problems being issued a HGV licence... Scary stuff
