Driving with Type2

Hi you only need to inform the Dvla if on insulin or a group 2 ( HGv)driver taking oral medication that could possibly cause your blood glucose to fall below 5 mmols .it is always sensible to let your insurance company know although it should not effect this if Type 2 on diet or tablets.

DVLA keep updating their guidance / rules if taking tablets and driving just a car, you only have to notify if you have had more than one hypo requiring assistance ie ambulance, doctor or friend that helps you recover from a hypo.

If on Insulin then you have to notify them asap, where they then restrict you to a max of a 3 year licence renewable. The rules for other classes of vehicles are different, where you have to notify them, when I was first diagnosed if one was on tablets I had to notify them.

You must how ever inform your insurance company, though it should not effect your premiums.

new diabetic this year on insulin in February 2013 I notified the RTA then but now I control my diabetes by diet only and 2 Metformin tablets a day. Quite often I am between 4 and 5 mmol/L in the morning. I believe this is OK to drive as I am not on insulin or meds. (apart from Metformin). I checked a conversion chart I think 4 & 5 mmol/L is between 71 & 90 mg/dl

DVLA guide lines, say if above 4.0 and below 5.0 take a snack, if below 4.0 don't drive. There is a rough guide on the link below, which has warning saying the info is out of date as its not been updated since May 2012, as DVLA constantly update their guidance you will need to check DVLA web site for latest news.
