DVLA Eye tests

As an insulin taking diabetic, who has had treatment for retinopathy, I find that to renew my driving licence I must have a visual field test.
I note that we already loose the right to drive a vehicule over 3.5 tons without extra medical tests.
I wonder why we have to have this eye test and what is the Diabetes UK stance on the matter. The normal visual requirement is to be able to read a number plate at 20m. Why is this not the same for diabetics? Everyone else is able to self certify that they meet the requirements whilst we have to attend an optician. Is this discrimination?
 
If you have any form of eye sight problem that is being treated by a specialist, you find that you will have to prove good eye sight to the DVLA...

I have several people who go through a similar with the DVLA due to eyesight treatment, but instead of the 3 year renewal taht we face as diabetics they are lucky because they only need to prove fit to drive if they have a terration or another operation that might effect there eye sight...

funny thing though when my dad drove (he's gave up driving 10 years a go when he ws 81, his choice) even though he totally blind in one eye never had any problems with the DLVA, but there again he been driving since before the war and never had a acccident
