Sorry, but this is a very old problem.
Happened to me in 2011, DVLA applying the EU law, even before it was supposed to be actioned!!
There was a young lad on here a couple of years ago, with a similar petition. I signed his.
I contacted The British Diabetic Association 4 years ago. They got nowhere then. It appears they havent got much further now!
What are you seriously hoping to achieve?
Change EU laws? Get real!
Hi Helen,Hello,
My name is Helen and I have been a type 1 insulin dependent diabetic for the past 18 years. I am on an insulin pump and have excellent control of my diabetes. My Hba1c is good at 51mmols, and I have full awareness of hypo's. I am also a community nurse and use my car for work to get me around to see my patients as needed, therefore I particularly monitor my levels very closely due to driving.

Hi how glad I am that I have a French driving licence. I changed it several years ago just before I became a diabetic. My HGV is still upheld, and the way it works here is that it is a doctor who decides about your licence, not some faceless person who sits behind a desk. To say that 4 is the limit is also stupid. Each person is different and mine can go to 3.7 and I am still OK although I know and go and eat something. Certainly I know when I am in a situation whereby I should have something to eat like a banana or a pear.Hello,
My name is Helen and I have been a type 1 insulin dependent diabetic for the past 18 years. I am on an insulin pump and have excellent control of my diabetes. My Hba1c is good at 51mmols, and I have full awareness of hypo's. I am also a community nurse and use my car for work to get me around to see my patients as needed, therefore I particularly monitor my levels very closely due to driving.
In June 2014, I suffered two hypoglycaemic episodes during the night time whilst I was in a deep sleep. This was a very unusual occurrence for me and was caused by a sudden increase in temperature whilst I was also under a large amount of stress trying to work full time hours whilst completing a stressful university module. I did require assistance from my partner on both occasions and they occurred within a week of each other. Following support from my Diabetes Specialist Team my basal rates were adjusted and I had no further episodes, my consultant luckily also put in writing that he was happy for me to continue to drive as I am very vigalant at checking my blood glucose levels and monitor them as per DVLA guidelines before driving.
When reapplying for my Driving Licence as normal, I ticked yes to the box which said that I had required assistance from another person to treat two hypoglycaemic episodes within the past 12 months. There was no room to go into details around the context of these hypos and so I attached a letter with my application. On the 21st October I recieved a letter stating that my licence had been revoked on the basis of these two hypo's. When I contacted the DVLA they advised me that they did not need to contact my GP or Consultant to look into my medical records and I automatically no longer met the driving licence criteria. I find it both ignorant and discriminative that the DVLA do not consider these factors as diabetes is a complex condition to manage and if a Consultant thinks someone is medically fit to drive then their professional opinion should be taken into account. After lots of research and letters to raise awareness of this problem it is clear that this rule has come from the EU legislation brought into place in 2011.
I am currently in the process of appealing to the DVLA to try and get my licence back. However, I felt that even if there is minimal chance of me not getting my licence back that i simply could not just sit here and do nothing. So after letters and emails I have now set up a petition which can be accessed here:https://www.change.org/p/rt-hon-dav...ed-carefully-in-the-context-of-the-individual
Please read, sign and share the petition and if anyone wants to contact me you can do so on here or on Facebook where I have set up a group called Action for Diabetic Drivers. I hope that this petition can at least bring the concerns to the government so that these regulations can be reviewed and hopefully prevent this happening to other diabetics. I would also love to hear from anyone that has done this before or is going through the same problem. I hope that it is the case that there aren't many of you, but from my research I worry that this probably isn't the case. Wish me luck!!

translated from http://www.afd.asso.fr/diabete-et/permis-de-conduire/delivrance-renouvellement( a licence) ; is neither granted nor renewed if the applicant or driver has recurrent severe hypoglycaemia or / and impaired awareness of hypoglycemia. We speak of "severe hypoglycemia when the assistance of a third party is needed. And recurrent hypoglycemia occurs when more than two (such) episodes of hypoglycaemia occcur during a period of twelve months. The medical officer of the prefecture will thus be particularly vigilant in assessing the risk of hypoglycaemia. The diabetic driver "must demonstrate an understanding the risk of hypoglycaemia and adequate control of the disease."
I do not believe this is EU legislation. I lived in Holland for several years, and even though diabetic was given a valid driving licence - through the Town Hall - valid until I reached 70. I had two hypos, and was under the local hospital, and did not get a letter revoking my driving licence.Sorry, but after a years convoluted grief with this uncaring, unregulated, under resourced & wholly diabolical institution....never again.
As far as Im concerned never will I disclose anything to them, & never will I report a hypo to a UK GP.
If I were a mass murderer (no intended pun) and confessed to a priest HE would not disclose this to anyone. If I were a similar mass murderer and consulted a solicitor or barrister THEY would not disclose to anyone either.
A degree of professionalism sorely missing from the NHS

Er, yes actually!
In fact, there are already moves underway - at the DVLA and EU legislative - to review the ridiculous element of this law.
I don't think many of us have an issue with the ruling when applied to hypos in waking hours, but when it's also being used for night - time hypos when the individual is asleep... well that's just plain stupid.
Thankfully, bureaucrats are beginning to realise that too.
so do we sit back and do nothing then?? That would be ridiculous!Sorry, but this is a very old problem.

Well we can but hope and if we sit back nothing will change so the more people that take action the better

Thank you Dusty13 it's very much appreciated.Signed the petition and emailed the link to some of my friends. This directive is ridiculous and it is a subject close to my heart. Best of luck
Hi Euphemia I'm not really sure what you mean sorry? It's not for donations but to sign the petition to support the cause. If you need me to send you the link let me know. Thanks Helen.Hi Helen, tried to make a donation, but the expiry date on the calendar only goes up to 2012!

I know Helen , I have signed the petition and got a few others to do so also. I am sure there was a request for donations for posters ect to spread the word.
It really is so ridiculous treating daytime hypos the same as nocturnal hypos!!! I am convinced the more people that are aware of this absurd EU legislation will come up with the same conclusion.
Maybe if everyone that has signed the petition writes to their MP also . I will be writing to mine!!
Hi Euphemia. Thank you for signing the petition and sharing that's brilliant. I haven't personally requested any donations for posters but I am more than happy to send people posters for free if people can make use of them . I have a Facebook group called action for diabetic drivers so people can contact me directly on there or via the website which is currently being worked on.
Thank you also for thinking about writting to your MP about this. I would encourage anyone to do this as I have found my own MP and many MEP's I have contacted very supportive. Ashley Fox and Claire Moody in particular as they have been able to contact the EU and the DVLA to ensure this is discussed at the next refit meeting in March 2015.
I am also awaiting a reply from the EU regarding the research they used to develop this directive as I have concerns regarding this. After reading the report there was no evidence used regarding nocturnal hypos, some of the research was methodological flawed and several of the studies were more than 10 years out of date and not generalisable. Unfortunately I'm still yet to hear back from them regarding this. Anyone can also contact EU directly to raise their concerns and again I think the more the better.
Thanks again for your support and if you want a poster let me know and i can send some out to you.
