Hi i'm Rob
I have had Type 2 since 2003 which was spotted on my HGV medical, back then i was just on the usual metformin, I informed DVLA back then and all was ok for my driving licence no need to go for further medicals, but now Jan 2012 due to poor control (levels were 12 - 20) I am now on insulin, I was advised by my diabetic nurse to inform DVLA of the change to insulin which since moved to insulin my bloods have been great. I no longer drive HGV as I work in a office but did not want to loose the entitlement unless needed so i informed DVLA but since then I have had from DVLA hospital eye test as i wear glasses, opticians field test, GP medical for car entitlement, and now they have sent me to a hospital consultant in diabetes to do a HGV medical refusing to allow my GP to do it.
DVLA have had my licence since Jan 2012 and although they say I can drive at the moment they will not return the licence until the HGV medical outcome. My consultant is refusing to take my blood readings of the last 3 months that DVLA are requiring me to show as they can not down load my machine. They have now giving me a one touch machine for free and want me to test twice a day for two weeks before they will even consider a medical. and now they want me to start going to the hospital instead of my nurse on a regular basis.
I have now been speaking to a few people with driving issues and diabetes including a couple of GP's and they are also not happy when the hospital gets involved it brings a lot of problems if your own GP's diabetic nurse is handling it ok there should be no reason why qualified GP especially as mine who specialises in diabetes can not do a medical for HGV when he can for a car, I'm told the more people who complain to DVLA and perhaps ask for the help of diabetes uk to see if we can get this overturned so that our GP's who know us and deal with us can still treat us, just because we have to inform DVLA they should not be allowed to go against any other medical practitioner.
Kind Regards
Robert John Napper
