Quick question…. Going out for a birthday lunch in a week or so. It’s my first time going to a restaurant since starting insulin injections. How do others do their injections ? If I inject before leaving the house it’s a half hour journey to the restaurant, then there’s the wait for food, or do I take the injection with me and do it in the car outside, or in the restaurant ? Is there a right way ? Suggestions appreciated thank you.

I’m not on insulin but my dad was T2 on insulin and he always did it at the table in the restaurant or at meal times at home. A lot can happen between leaving home and getting your food - traffic jams, delays getting your table, wait for food, serving staff drop your food as they are bringing it to you - yes I’ve had that happen! At the risk of me cross posting dad always liked his food in front of him before injecting

I always inject at the table.
As you sa, you do not want to inject beforehand without knowing what you are going to eat or how long it is going to take to arrive.
There should be no reason to leave the table (or restaurant) to do a discrete injection.
Usually, I would just raise my shirt and inject. ON the rare occasion I wore a dress, I could lift it slightly under the table and inject into my thigh.

If there is anyone who says they do not like the sight of needles, they can look away. Whilst I have some sympathy regarding needle phobias, remember insulin is keeping you alive.

I'm another one who just injects anywhere and everywhere, I don't feel the need to be secretive about it. People either don't even notice, or they may ask some interested and friendly questions, which is fine with me.

Eating out means injecting at the table for me.

Hi,

It’s one of those necessary things needed during the day to day activities.

Though I do sometimes wonder how even more discrete it could be using a pump...

With an insulin pen I can't see how you would have a problem , I certainly have never had anyone say anything to me and I am not always that discreet , just roll up my shirt sleeve and inject !

I generally make sure I wear skirt/top or jeans/top combo, then inject under the table by just lifting my top a bit and pushing my waistband down a bit. I inject once the food arrives

Depends upon the pump and where you put it.
I never worked out how to discretely bolus from my tubed pump when I kept it in my bra.
Much easier and discrete if you have a pdm or phone app.

Although there is not guarantee when your order might arrive.

Depending on the lay out of a restaurant, it can be possible eyeball other orders coming out giving a rough idea on what you ordered?

Another trick (pending on the climate.) i wear a jacket or zip up hoodie acting as a “shield” for stomach jabs.

Oddly, I’m out for a meal tonight at a Thai place? (Group of 6. 1 of which I’ve never met.)

I wear tracksuit bottoms and tee shirt and the reason why it's easier to push the needle through my tracksuit bottoms or under my tee shirt and I don't care if it is in front of anyone because of this reason it is medical and I need it to help me to live and if they don't like it they can go and sit somewhere else as I don't care what they say it's to protect life and more importantly my life and I always make sure that I cover the needle afterwards so that no one gets a stab off it and can get anything from the needle even though I don't have anything to give in a disease and that way you are looking out for yourself

Hi, I am a type 1, when I go out I inject while I am out. Don’t be ashamed of having to inject, if people don’t like it then they don’t have to look. I am as discrete as I can be , but I will not be put into a toilet to take what I need for my health. Enjoy your meal
