Hi All,
I was diagnosed with type 2 in 2008 with HbA1C of 11. I was put on Metformin 500mg X3 daily. My BMI was 23 and cholesterol was 2.5 so I was never the classic obese diabetic, and I was going to the gym 3 times a week for about 1 hour and burning around 300 cals each time. The Metformin did lower the HbA1C to around 7.0, and in 2010 I decided to see what increasing the exercise levels would do to this. I started going to the gym 5 times a week and working for about 75 minutes and burning around 600 cals each time. My HbA1C dropped to 5.0 and stayed that way for 18 months, it rose to 5.5 on the last reading in January 2012. My waist measurement has dropped 2" and my weight has stabilised at around 72kg and that is comfortable for my height (177cm).
I know that this level of exercise is not suitable for everybody, but it does show that blood glucose levels and insulin resistance can be affected by exercise. I tried a course of 14 weeks of High Intensity Intermittent Exercise from January this year, that had no effect on my weight or blood glucose levels but it did improve my VO2max by 20%, so I will repeat that this coming Winter. I used the Wingate Test system of 30 secs max effort with 4 mins recovery for 6 repetitions. But I would not recommend this for anybody who is not already fairly fit especially if you are getting ancient (I am 71) but it is possible with dedication.
Exercise has been shown to have a significant effect on diabetes and there is a lot of research in the Sports Science world on this subject, so I would encourage anyone to try to work out regularly and see the benefits.
