The specialist says my mother has "alot of problems" in her left eye, the right one being completely blind. This is all down to her diabetes. Her remaining eyesight at the moment is very poor, very blurry. I am researching all I can to try and find something, anything that will improve and maintain her vision. If anyone knows of any supplements etc please let me know. Thank you.

Hi @Miss316, how well does your mother control her diabetes? Uncontrolled glucose content can play havoc with the retina and fluid within the eye itself. Keep track on the forum as someone will have information you require. Good luck!!

As above, I don't think supplements are the answer.

Rigid control of BG levels is the best way to reduce or avoid complications.

You don't say how old your mother is, or if she is living independently or being cared for.

Above a certain age the BG targets for T2 diabetics are relaxed a great deal because of the difficulty in maintaining a strict regime; all sorts of issues including other complications of old age which may impact on the maintenance of diet, exercise, and carefully controlled medication.

Cynically (moi?), this may include the background thought "At that age you haven't got much to look forward to. Just enjoy yourself in your little remaining time".

Very well said!

Hi @Miss316 ,

I'm agreeing with the above comments.
Your mum should be working closely with her consultants & HCPs with regards to her diabetes control as the "base line."
Whilst tackling the eye issue from there...

The term I was trying to remember is diabetic retinopathy, caused by the build up of glucose in the eye, causing a build up of pressure which damages the retina lining the back of the eye.

There are supplements that are targeted at people with sight issues, but whether they are beneficial or not is debatable.

I once asked my Ophthalmologist for a supplement recommendation and they didn't really recommend one, simply saying that a diet rich in veg & fruit would provide all the nutrients and antioxidants to aid eye health.

As said the best thing your mum could do is to get her diabetes under control, it's also important to keep bp and cholesterol levels under control when someone has diabetes related eye conditions, it says all this and much more in the following website:

Best wishes.
