You may have noticed that a post was received yesterday claiming that Type 2 diabetes can be completely cured by eating apples. This post has been removed on the grounds of safety.

The poster has taken a genuine study done by Dr Neil Nedley in the US 11 years ago into the effects of different forms of apple (whole, concentrated juice and pureed) on blood sugar. He measured the rate of rise, the peak and the rate of fall in blood glucose. The research showed that the 3 different forms affect sugars differently and the rate at which the sugar levels drop back to normal also differed. The important thing to note is that these tests were all conducted on non-diabetics. This means that their normal insulin response to the apples treated the rise in blood sugar.

Our poster from India, who has no medical or scientific qualification, has completely misrepresented this doctor's research as proving that it was the apples that lowered the blood sugar back to normal. Of course this was not the case - it was the fructose present in the apples that caused the sugar to rise and insulin that caused it to return to normal.

The poster claims to be diabetic himself and to have proved the theory by experimenting on himself. What the claims do prove, if anything, is that whilst the poster may believe himself to be diabetic, its is highly likely that he is not. This person's recommendation that Type 2s should all stop taking diabetes medication and instead cure themselves by eating apples is not only extremely dangerous, but could prove potentially fatal to a Type 2 who attempted it.
